The reason most people only talk about the lowers is that the lowers fail excitingly, the uppers do not seem to be much of a concern.
Also, and more importantly, is that the lowers can be changed quickly and easily in the driveway by most of us. The uppers are more involved in that they need pressing out and in. Likely still doable but more difficult than the lowers for the backyard mechanic.

Keep in mind the uppers are a royal pain in the ass to press out and press in. If you do decide to do it, just rent the Ball Joint Press from Oriely's and get a bigass breaker bar. Also, it's way easier if you cut the ball joint shaft before you press it out.

What he said. Also - If you have the space, buy a 20-ton press from HF. It's $150. Yank the spindle when you're replacing the LBJ, and the press has the uppers out in no time. Well worth it considering how god awful the C-clamp method is.

FWIW the part number on the 3rd Gen LBJ bolts is 90080-10066, you need 8 total

Changed my LBJs this weekend, easy peasy
I ended up removing the calipers and dust shields to get a pitman arm puller comfortably in there and it made short work of separating the ball joints.
I'm pretty sure I don't NEED an alignment, as the LBJ is sleeved to realign with the spindle, so the only variance would be the steering knuckle hole location. I'll have the tire shop align it for shits and giggles this week and report back.
AFAIK, I have no need to do the UBJs

I just want to give [MENTION=120071]mtbtim[/MENTION] a shout out for his videos and support of owners and forum members. The video above set me up to knock this job out in about 1-2 hours. The first time is the longest as you learn what you don't know along the way, and I cleaned and rotated my tires at the same time, but Tim's video gave me the knowledge and confidence to tackle it.
Honestly, it wasn't even about saving the money that a shop would have charged, but it was easy, and shops wanting to charge hundreds of dollars to do this just piss me off. Plus I used the money I saved to buy a new radiator and hoses.

I'm now learning how much time the video editing takes because I'm helping out due to the fact I have more free time than Sean. The dude does an awesome job. I've done some solo videos and edited them myself, but Sean does it much better than me.
