overheating

Greetings,
I put a new idle air control valve on today. All hoses are back where they go, and everything is plugged in. also put a new thermostat in. I went for a drive and it started to overheat fast. In fact I had to stop twice to let it cool off so I could it home. I did take the water housing off. I sprayed cleaner on the sensor. did I destroy it???? the truck is a 1996 2.7L with 260,000 miles. Any advice is appreciated.

Thermostat OEM? or after market?
Yeah, may be you inserted it in the wrong direction.

You can always try it with the thermostat out. It's only needed to warm up in cold weather. You can check the radiator by touching the top and bottom when it's running. The top should be hot but the bottom cold, otherwise it's not cooling. (Actually you don't really need to tough the top!). If the bottom isn't cold something is wrong with it, either it's clogged up, the fan isn't running, the water pump isn't circulating or something.

Yea check the orientation of the thermostat, but it shouldn't make that big of a difference 10 degrees max. The dummy gauge can't pick that type of change up

Make sure there are no big air pockets in your cooling system

thanks for the replies,
I let it sit for a couple of hours and cool off. I then put more coolant in and while pouring it in I heard and saw coolant dripping out somewhere around the water flange side. it was getting dark so I gave another try. After it reached temp if began to overheat and I could see drips and steam coming out somewhere around or near the water flange area. Oh God!!!!

The new thermostat is a Stant from Advance. I put the old back in and still got the heat.

In the morning I plan to take off the upper hose and flange and check the gasket.
thanks again.

Ok, I found the gasket had slipped down when I was putting back on. My bad.
watched you tube videos on how to burp a coolant system. Added the proper amount of coolant, watched the bubbles come up, ran for about 5 minutes.
Put cap on radiator and drove it with temp up where it should be, and up to 65 mph. NO OVERHEATING!!!! Thanks to all who replied.

Don't know if your year has a rear control unit (heat and a/c) if it does crank that up high and keep flexing the inlet hose, adding coolant as needed.

no rear heat or air. this is a base model 4 cylinder with hand crank windows, no cruise. Very simple. it has 260,000 miles and is my everyday ride. some days I put 120 miles on it. love it, it's simple with faded paint. All I'm concerned with is that it is mechanically right. So, give me some thoughts on how you would upgrade or maintain it. I think it's time to do the timing chain. any suggestions??

The timing chain in the 2.7 is supposed to be a lifetime part. Unless you plan to do more than the timing chain its probably better left alone. Have you checked compression?

I would just change the oil and drive it
