P1700 Weird Code???

I have a 1999 4 cylinder 4Runner, and the check engine light check coming on and off, and sometime even without me discounting the battery or resetting it with a tool. Have any of your 4Runners ran into this problem? P1700 is the code.

From the 2002 FSM: p1700 Speed Sensor No. 2 Malfunction. I think its on the back of the transfer case, right before the drive shaft.

It's more than likely one of your ABS sensors. 4Runners use the ABS for the speedo.

On your 1999 4 cylinder:

P1700: Automatic transmission (A/T) vehicle speed sensor #2

Vehicle speed sensor #2 is a two wire speed sensor located on the transmission tail shaft. Vehicle speed sensor #2 wire colors are Yellow/Red, White/Red.

(note so you don't get confused)
Vehicle speed sensor #1 is a three wire speed sensor also located on the transmission tail shaft. Vehicle speed sensor #1 wire colors are Black/Yellow, Pink/Blue, Gray/Blue.

I just had this same code thrown on my 1996. Being a beginner at all things mechanical and whatnot I came here! Thanks for that info, now I just need to get that part ordered and scratch my head for an hour until it gets fixed!

Edit: Well, it turns out I need to replace my Neutral Safety Switch. Glad I didn't buy a VSS since I'm a little low on funds right now. Extra thanks now to EatonKyleH for posting that! Went to check if my car would start in neutral and guess what....she did!
