Paint color help

Hey Guys,
I need help finding a touch up pen for my '15 Mag Gray 4runner trail. The color for the main body is easy to find but I can't seem to find the color for the small light silver part that is on the front and rear bumpers of the trail. I have spoken to 3 different dealerships in my area and none of them are able to give me any help. One of them actually called their distributor and spoke to them but they weren't able to help me either. All I am told is they don't have a paint code because that piece comes pre-painted.

Silver never matches in touch up because of the high metallic. Go to an auto parts store and pick the closest one. It will match as good as if you had the correct coded color. This is from experience.

Pick a color and paint the whole thing. Black or color match the mag grey... or leave it, it adds character and make the second scratch easier to accept.

I don't think the valences are metallic, but the closest paint code may be the classic silver metallic: 1F7 Toyota 4Runner Touchup Paint Codes, Image Galleries, Brochure and TV Commercial Archives

I couldn't tell the difference from 5 ft back on my truck. If it bothers you, just repaint/dip/wrap'em

You want perfection or good enough?

If you want perfection, any good auto paint supplier can analyze and mix the paint from a part with their spectral scanner super complex scanning machine.

Have them mix up a pint (or quart if you need that much), make sure you use wax and grease remover, wet sand the part, use a plastic specific primer and reduce the paint per instructions. My favorite paint is PPG.

Then, get yourself one of these and make the part look like new. They are far superior to any shake and shoot on the market:

The work is in the prep, not the paint. But bad paint will ruin good prep.

If you decide to DIY, buy a clearcoat that is 2K(2 part) not 1K. They are available in cans, usually a bit harder to find.

Something like this:
Spray Max 2k High Gloss Clearcoat aerosol

I have a silver trail and the front bumper "skid plate" is the exact same color. If a paint pen is the route you want to go, just get a silver paint pen and you're good to go. My local dealer gives paint pens away for free

I can check up on the code tomorrow (it is in my garage right now).

I know this isn't what you're looking for but as far as the magnetic grey......I bought the toyota factory touch up paint for a couple of chips on my front bumper. It didn't match!!! It was a shade lighter. So...I went to advance auto parts and bought the dupli-color touch up in Magnetic Grey and it matched perfectly. Anyone else find this to be true with magnetic grey?

Did you get part 2 at the dealer? I have attitude black which uses 2 paint pens. Black base and metallic clear. Code 218 and 218-bc.

Yes, dupli-color's mag grey is a perfect match for our paint code. And, although we're not really talking about the silver bumper parts that the OP is asking about, I use the duplicolor spray paint for scratch touch ups also. I just spray a bit into a water bottle's cap, take a q-tip (the paper ones, not the plastic ones), snap off one of the cotton heads, leaving me with just a paper "stick". I dip that into the paint, then use that like a paint brush to either drop a dab of paint into a rock chip, or run a bead of paint into a longer scratch.

I'm even more anal than most here, as I will actually pull out the 2000 grit sandpaper and a wood tongue depressor and wet sand (with soapy water spray bottle) until its flush with the rest of the body, then buff it out with 3M's 3-step liquid compounds! Comes out to where you cannot tell its ever been touched up!

Of course, y'all can skip the sand and buff steps if you just wanna cover up a nasty scratch or chip...

flyinhawaiian01 - I like your idea of the q-tip. I picked up some of these paint applicators on amazon that work great as well.

When I got them they were a little cheaper I think, but still the convenience makes them worth it IMHO.

They give a lot more control than the applicator brushes on the touch up pens. I will try out your idea when I run out.

I use a match stick from a book of matches. Tear it out and you have a perfect touch up brush.

I just had 1g3 mixed using PPG paints and it was waayy to dark. I have an OEM touch up pen and its fine.

I used the Rustoluem version of PlastiDip. It went on very well in several thin layers. I left everything on the truck. It masked off pretty easily with painter's tape. You can stick playing cards behind the trim wherever it's difficult to get the tape just right. I also covered the surrounding areas with plastic sheeting just to make sure there was no overspray going on the body. It was crazy easy to do, and didn't take long. I've been through the car wash with it multiple times with no issues at all. It's held up great so far.

Well damn! I know where my next set of days off are going now! Plastidip'ing the front and rear, installing a CBI ditch light mount to run a HAM radio antenna and running the cables...

What are your thoughts on the Rustoleum version? Better? Worse?
