Painted rear bumper and grill on my 99' and buffed ARB.

However mine was pretty involved. Removed rear bumper and used my DA to sand up the chrome.

- Started with 40 grit, than 80, than 120
- Wiped down with acetone (note, I didnt need the huge can in the automotive section, so off to the health and beauty area where I spend the majority of my time at the store :naughty: and picked up a $.99 bottle of acetone (used for removing fingernail polish). Just a little money saving tidbit.
- Sprayed adhesion promoter (3 coats)
- Sprayed self etching primer (5 coats)
- Wetsanded
- Sprayed Krylon satin black (5 coats) and let dry in the house for 3 days (wife was a little pissed)

Also, for some reason my bumpers were rusty on the inside probably due to the crappy metal, so I sprayed some primer and undercoating that I had lying around.

For the grill I masked off the gray area, sanded with 80 grit and then 120. Wiped down and sprayed with Krylon Fusion. Let dry for 5 days.

oh runrunner...great great job on the bumpers, idk if I could wait 3 days like you, but I guess patience is the key to achieving great results.

Look into painting the rear window deflector in white just like Ron Helmuth did his..gave it a nice subtle appearance, makes the top portion of your truck all white..just me.

Yes they're OEM..I had a set of those recently sold.

Keep us updated on the rear bumper holds up over time.

Id like to paint mine but im affraid of the paint chipping off it easily .

Nice job! This is my next project now that I've done my wheels in Graphite. How hard did you sand the chrome on the grill?? Any pics of it before the paint went on? TIA....

I was just reading on some other forum how "Oven-Off" stove cleaners can be used to cleanly remove chrome off plastic parts...such as the grill and any chrome painted plastic.. word is you just let it soak for a few mins. and chrome will melt off leaving smooth plastic underneath...

Might be worth a shot!

Interesting. I also read a post where a heat gun could be used to just peel the chrome off these grills...that it's like a foil sheet. Lots of good stuff on the interwebs these days.

Tried the heat gun method but the chrome just won't peel off clean..I ended up with some nasty warped plastic due to excessive heat.

I would think you would need to heat and cool successively to allow the differential expansion rates to cause the chrome to separate. At least I am guessing that is the mechanism that method is getting at.

Nice looking truck man. If you ever end up selling those rims I call first dibs haha I can't find them anywhere and they look PHAT on 3rd gen's.
