Painting frustration

Ok, so short story I am a novice at paint. I get the idea. but anyway I have painted three different body parts with different success. I will save the successes for later but here is my failure. What causes this?



The steps were:

Wash chrome plastic
Sand chrome plastic
Install satoshi grill
Prime everything
Paint grill flat black
Let black dry
Cover black grill
paint white
and then crackle.

I think this is spots of heavy black overspray that maybe didn't cure correctly?

How thick were your coats of paint?

Poor adhesion and thick coats could cause it. I see its by a window, a lot of temperature changes while it cured?

not that thick. But when I went to thin, my bumper came out as a satin finish. now I have a future project to repaint that. The little pieces under my headlights got the same treatment and my grill and they turned out like factory. Coats were first = light, second = light, third = heavy for gloss.

Sorry, i edited my other post right after I made it, but see the edits. What paint are you using? Single stage natural white?

I know ATU recommends clear coat with ALL their paints, even the ones that are single stage from toyota.

If it were me I'd sand it down, get rid of the cracks then maybe repaint it and add CC instead of a thick third coat.

Couple quick questions.
How cold was it when you shot the paint?

After you sanded, before you painted, did you wipe it down with alcohol?

When you were painting, were you applying light coats or heavy coats?

How long between coats?

It cracked once and I sanded and then wiped down with a wet rag (water), then dry and then repaint.

Garage is warm. high 60s low 70s but the first time it cracked they were being heated by hot halogen lamps.

no alcohol clean. I am using duplicolor BTY1607 (056) and clear coat was supposed to go on after the last coat. I am waiting about 10 minutes inbetween coats.

Like I said same(ish) process for three different body parts, three different results. I felt like a pro after my little pieces under headlights turned out so well.

no windows in garage. no wild swings in temps.

OK so until further notice my plan is to set this thing aside for a couple of days and let it REALLY dry) and then I will sand and wipe down with alcohol and then give it another go on friday or sat morning.

I had the same thing happen to me when I was paint matching my mirrors. Everything went perfect until the very last coat when I got too generous with the paint and didn't wait long enough before re-applying. :happens: If I were you, I would just keep the coats as light as you can, even if it takes 5-6 coats. Also try giving it some more time to dry between coats to make sure it bonds evenly before reapplying.

that crinckle in the paint is the paint not ahearing to the material correctly. some acetone to clean the surface real good. paint doesnt like oils and stuff. water as a cleaning agent isnt going to cut it. armor all type of liquids is paints worst enemy
