Periodic humming/vibes

What's up guys, I have a vibration problem that I've been trying to straighten out for about a month or so now.

When i reach around 55-60mph on the highway there's a humming and slight vibration. It is speed related as there are no vibrations before i reach highway speeds, therefore I think I can rule any wheel bearings out..

It's like a woooom....woooom...woooom sound lol. Not exactly a constant woooooooooooooooom.

Here's a list of crap i've replaced:
>New oem LBJs
>new struts
>new rack bushings
>new sway bar bushings

>Diff fluids are topped off
>ujoints were greased about a month ago
>tires are new (8k miles on them)
>new brakes front and rear

I think that's it..

Both CV boots are torn, though I suspect it's a ujoint issue. Has anyone else had a similar issue, or can someone provide some input?

Have you had your tires balanced?

I had the same issue - vibration in the steering wheel at 55-65mph. Went away once I had my tires rebalanced.

You might want to test your driveshaft and see if it's balanced properly as well.

I've thought it could be the tires too. Since my tires are new so I can probably get them to re-balance my them for free.
 
I'm subb'ing this since I have the exact same issue. Replaced tires 1 1/2 years ago with no change.

Narrowed it down to either my driveshaft (front or rear, does the front turn with 4WD off?), front wheel bearings (rears have been replaced), CV axles or transfer case/transmission.

It has become louder after I had the rear diff rebuilt and did some 100+ MPH dyno runs lol.
 
I've been having the exact same problem for about a year now. Wooom.....wooom.....woooom when I hit 60mphs (almost exactly). The second I let off the gas, the sound goes away. I'm assuming its something with the rear diff. If I even go 5mphs faster or slower than 60, the noise isn't there.

It hasn't gotten any louder or worse though. Fluids are all topped off, everything is greased and so on.

It's a very faint noise and 95% of people probably wouldn't even notice it so I've decided to ignore it.

I just installed new tires last week but I haven't remembered to see if the noise is still there, I doubt it went away though.

Yep, no one else feels it or hears it but me lol. I want to ignore it but I can't.
 
Oddly enough, on my way home I tried to listen for that noise and I could really hear it. It's so faint to begin with so maybe I'll notice it in the future.

I doubt putting new tires on it would fix it but....????
 
If it's the tires you'll feel the vibration in the steering wheel. If you are feeling the vibration through the floor like I am, it's not the tires. I just don't know what it is yet.

I could see it happening if the tires are out of balance.. I'm going to get mine rebalanced this weekend. Should be included under warranty since my tires are new.

Yes, tundra 5100 + toytec eibach. tires are 285/75/16

I feel it in the floor. And I'm not even sure if I hear it haha. It might just be a vibration.

You and I have the same problem then. I'll be yanking my rear driveshaft soon and driving around in 4WD to see if that takes it away. I'll post back up in a few weeks when I have time if you are still searching for the source.

It's a harmonic vibration like you said, you hear a low humming as it shakes very quickly and causes the floor to vibrate slightly.
 
I’ve got a very similar vibration that I’ve been chasing for almost a year. Dropping the front end to about 2.5” and installing adjustable rear upper links to correct pinion angle has helped a TON but it’s still there some. I’ve sort of been chasing my tail since I realized late in the game that the new driveshaft I bought and some runout. I had a new u-joint put in the factory driveshaft yesterday, so I’m going to swap them in the next few days when I have time.

Have any of y’all noticed it smoothing out as you go around a bend in the highway? Mine seems like it does sometimes, so I sort of wonder if it’s not the CVs. Like [MENTION=115347]gamefreakgc[/MENTION] said it’s a harmonic vibration, or at least multiple vibrations at very close frequencies. I’m wondering if the difference in wheel speed from inside to outside in a gentle turn is enough to push the vibration frequencies far enough apart to reduce or eliminate constructive interference.
 
So I got my tires balanced again, there was a weight that came off the inside of my wheel. I got excited that this was my issue, however when I got on the highway I was disappointed to find out the vibrations didn't go away.

Last weekend I replaced my upper ball joints. My passenger side had a ton of play in it.

Highway driving has been tighter, not really any steering wandering now which is nice. There also seems to be LESS harmonic vibration... But unfortunately it feels like it's still there. My girlfriend thinks I'm crazy when I ask her if she hears what I'm talking about lol. I guess I should just deal with it

Did you ever resolve it? I just pulled my rear driveshaft and drove at the same speeds in 4WD using the front only, noise is still there. At a loss of what to check next.

Have you checked the rear diff yet. That's what a similar sounding issues turned out o be on my 2000 SR5. It was the last thing on my mind because the original owner in Phoenix had the diff rebuilt just before I bought it.

Had my mechanic check this as a last resort, the magnet on the drain plug was a little fuzzy with metal particles. Tried a flush and refill, particles came back so something was slowly disintegrating in there. My mechanic rebuilt the innards with all new parts as opposed to taking a chance on a pick and pull replacement. No problems since and that annoying hard to pin down hum is gone. (Replaced by a couple of others but I know what they are related to)

Gone through a few rear diff fluid changes now and no more metal particles on the magnet as well.

Had one of these guys get inside my truck once when the tailgate was open, that was an easier type of hum to get rid of...

Vibration issue still remains unresolved. Had a small exhaust leak since I bought it. Finally got around to welding it a few weeks ago. The GF now feels and hears the same vibrations I do..lol

Rear diff fluid looks great & all driveline components are greased up. I might as well try the magnetic drain plug though

I have my 4Runner in the shop for diagnostics. The same noise you have is getting louder and I'm concerned it is a bearing either in the front differential or the wheel bearing about to go out. Will let you know what they say.
 
I had a similar noise that I thought was coming from the front end but ended up being the rear driver side wheel bearing. replaced both in the back and back to normal.
