Pick up and go camping

I hate loading up the rig for camping trips, but love to wander the west. I am thinking roof top tent and some type of most likely home made lockable storage system for the gear.

My question is what have you guys done to facilitate pick up and go, non-supported trips in your 5th gen and what kind of gear have you found makes secure organization in the t4r possible?

We make a list for each type of trip and leave it on the side of the fridge. Road trip, camping trip, trail run, you get the idea. Each time we go, we add one or two things to it that would have been nice to have. That way when you want to go somewhere, there is less to try to remember. I have CRS so to try and get everything together in a timely manner and remember everything just aint happening. As far as cargo ideas, do a search there are tons of ideas, and everyone is different.
 
All my crap is stacked on a shelf right next to the 4runner in the garage. A few things get switched out depending on season, but otherwise, I am packed and headed out in 10-15 minutes.

How to you keep things from bouncing around?

Rubbermaid style totes, cargo net, some people design sliding shelves, just be creative, search, you don't have to do what everyone else does, you can come up with ideas too. Then post up pics of what you come up with so it helps the next person. Look through peoples build threads. There is a plethora of info on here.

I personally use frontrunner storage boxes. They interlock and are great for packing and storing. I have some soft boxes I use for food items as well since they collapse as we eat the food out of them. Bungies also are helpful if planning to do high speed bouncy stuff.

Once you learn how to pack it all, you come up with a system and bouncing items isn't a problem. There are cheaper options than the one I use but they are extremely well made and convenient.

I've got a couple of the 24gal. action packers already loaded up and ready to go. I usually use ratchet straps or the pull straps. Right now I'm trying to consolidate most of my gear into 1)24gal & 1)8gal action packer. Technology is amazing now days with smaller/lighter/stronger camping gear. Lately I've been looking/shopping at REI. Some of the gear there are outstanding but $pricey$. Hope you get yours all figure out.

That sounds a lot like what I am going for, I am just coming from a pick up, and that's a lot easier to tie down gear
 
Lots of commercial "cargo net" solution.

A RTT (roof top tent) is great too, since the tent, the mat, etc.. are all taken care of.

A good roof rack helps too. You can throw a few pelican or hardigg cases up there, and strap or net them. Plus a few jerry cans of fuel and a couple of jerry cans of water.

A luxury will be a onboard fridge (ARB freezer/fridge).

I am interested in cargo nets? I have food and water taken care of just looking for practical ways to tie it down, have you used a RTT if so what one do you recommend? Most of my travels are in Utah, Nevada, Colorado, Idaho ect.... I take off any time I can escape work.

On gas I don't want to put it in my cargo bay, I have my dog and smoke, along with all my other stuff ;) I just don't feel that safe with it in the back. Thoughts?
I don't know how the top weight will effect the 4 runner, any idea on running a top Heavy rig?

Has anyone used the baja bins, I was thinking I could bolt them into a slid out. I could also assemble modular go kits [emoji33]

Couple big black totes with laminated gear lists taped to them. When I get home, the totes get unloaded and repacked according to each gear list before I put them away. That way I'm packed for next time, and when it's time to go I throw some clothes in a bag and grab the family and we're gone. Getting a family of four out the door is like herding cats, and this is the only way. If I had to actually collect all our gear each time we wanted to take a weekend, we'd never leave the house.

Right now I'm trying to figure out a trailer situation, once I've got that down I won't even need to grab the totes from the garage because they'll be stored in the trailer. I'll just hook up and be on my way.

I wouldn't carry gas in the truck either. Strap it to a roof rack or put it on a swingout would be my suggestion.
 
I am really starting to get into the camping thing now that the truck is pretty much done.

I went with a Tepui tent since they are local and a buddy of mine sells them. I was able to drive to Tepui and they threw it up on the roof rack. Plus I can keep the sleeping bags/blankets/pillows up there so they won't take room inside of the truck. But for company it is up to you, there are a lot that make RTTs.

As for gear, I got myself a nice cooler (still debating on a fridge even though I spent an arm and a leg on the cooler), enough to hold a couple days of stuff for me and the lady. And as others have said some action packers/ storage bins that can be easily grabbed. As for tying it down, I have a storage box for tools and I use that fancy spider bungee net thingy to hold it down. Works well enough for me and was probably around $20 somewhere if I remember correctly.

Every trip I go on I get better at packing and find other things I need or want to make the trip better.

My wife and I had plans to buy a RTT and make some drawers in the back of the 4Runner but then we found out we were soon going to be a family of four so we scrapped that idea and after a lot more research and deliberation bought this instead.

It lives in the garage loaded and ready to go. This has really simplified camping preparations for us since we just add fresh food and go. There's more info at the link in my signature.

You do not want to store your gas in your vehicle! Too many scenarios that could go wrong; I have a double Jerry can mount on my K9 Rack; plus I'll have my shovel and hi-lift along with my OZ Tent RV-5 up top. Everything lays flat except the Jerry cans. I haven't taken it out loaded up yet; that's planned for next weekend; I'm sure I'll notice it but it the OME lift should settle down to take the weight.
 
You certainly do not want to carry your fuel cans inside. Thats when a sturdy roof rack comes in (and I like a ladder that allows me to get up the roof rack too). Unfortunately our 50 racks Gobi Roof Rack group buy *just* ended.
