Piecing lift together and question for those running LC / Tokico combo.

Hey all, I have been doing a lot of research on different lift options. I have read a lot of your build threads and based on what I have learned, my goals, and budget, I have an idea on the direction I might take. Before I pull the trigger though, I do have a few questions about your experience going down your road of lift choices.

My 4Runner is my DD. I currently have 265/75/16s, an AOR front bumper (winch to be added). I also have SPC Light Racing UCAs that are ready to put on. Down the road, I would like to add sliders, and some armor (maybe aluminum to keep weight down).

I have been considering pairing a SS 1.2 rear only lift with Tokicos with a front adjustable coilover. For the coilover, I was looking at a few options but King extended travel are my current front runner. They don't seem to be THAT much more expensive than a Toytec Boss CO. That, and the Kings don't use a digressive coil that might be a bit stiff for DD.

I don't see myself doing a ton of super technical rock crawling, but would like to be able to hit the trails and be capable. I don't need to be hauling ass on the dirt, but would appreciate a comfortable ride offroad as well as pavement.

Questions:

1.) If you have run the LC lift, what shocks did you use and how did you like them?

2.) If you ran Tokico blacks, did you have to enlarge the mounting bracket hole to properly mount them?

3.) Did you use a different shock paired with your LC coils? If so, what did you go with, and how did you like it?

Thanks for reading and thanks in advance for sharing your experiences.

I run tokico blacks. Don't have to modify anything. Getting the LC upper hardware like bushings are needed if I remember right. They ride awesome. Like OEM. Stiff enough to help the soft LC coils ride perfect IMO.

My buddy runs Bilsteins out back and it feels soft. I don't like it on the highway.

If I did my lift over I would do my rear end with Kings up front just like your planning.

Thanks for chiming in Jay.

I have gone through your build page quite a few times. I noticed that even though you have been running LC lift with the Tokico coils out back, that you still have good things to say about them. That is a positive note for sure. The main difference that I had considered compared to a standard SS 1.2 style lift is having the adjustable coilover up front.

I'm now running Icon coilovers on the front with Tokico blacks on the rear with some 8.5/8.75 wraps. Without weight in the back its a little bouncy, but with some extra weight (passengers and a little gear), it rides perfect. No drilling needed to mount the Tokicos. I think the purpose in drilling out the mount is to increase the amount of articulation, but I don't see how what I have now isn't enough.

When you say bouncy is this on dirt roads? Wash board maybe? I found no matter the shock setup that anything empty on dirt road is a little loose. Drop tire psi to 15 and it handles great.

Not answering any questions because I cannot relate. But I'll talk about my lift and just Give you an idea. So I have tundra 5100 upfront with eibach 640lbs and in rear I have 5100 with superflex (3.75" version ) I have front and rear bumper and skid plate. Currently have rock sliders of. The lift isn't cheap. And it rides "ok"! To me it's stiff up front. I don't like it. Even with bumper. The rear is little softer. I'm changing my lift to ICON CDC ALL AROUND. And I should have just did it from the gecko. Yea probably over kill. But half of what we do on our trucks. We don't need and are overkill.

Well, my overkill option I was looking at was pretty much the same as I am, but running King 2.5 adjustable shocks out back. But that is significantly more money. I figure that can always be an upgrade down the road if I choose.

Im running the Tokiko Blacks on my truck. I have run them with OME 891s and now with Toytec Superflexes. I really like the way they handle and make the truck ride. I think they are perfect. I will say that they were a little stiffer before my rear bumper and tire swing-out. All that extra weight hanging off the back makes any shock work harder. The ride did change a little after adding the rear armor, but it is still very good and I am very happy.

Adjustable dampening is a sweet pricy option.

How are you liking your Superflex coils? Have you ever run LC coils to compare them to the Superflex coils? It seems like they offer similar height, but different in other areas.

Love them so far, they handle the weight demands that I put on the truck and they paired well with the shock setup that I was already running. I have heard the LC coils don't handle weight as well, so I opted for the Superflexes. I have never run the LC coils so no real world comparison.

I'm running the full SS 1.2 kit with Tokico blacks in rear and Blisten in the front with the Tundra springs. I talked to Steve at Sonoran Steel and he said for what I wanted (cornering, towing, hauling) that the Tokico was much better. I am extremely happy with the SS 1.2 lift, it rides way better than stock, handles a load well, corners great, handles roots and rocks pretty smoothly, pretty much everything I wanted and it is all Toyota parts. Also the customer service from Steve is outstanding.
