who here on T4R has ever had their pinion seal fail?...


my truck had 191,000 mile & it technically wasn't leaking at all, when we got in there it seemed fine. We decided to replace it for you guys in order to make another video and because we were already in there it didn't hurt....


so who has had to replace theirs & what mileage did you have?

I had several fail on the older 80s Toyota mini pickups. I cant remember the mileage as its been too many years. I changed 2 or 3 of them though in different trucks.


I have one fail on my 2001 with 230k. I take a photo of it for you and Tim I am curious what you guys think. May take me a day or so for the picture.

Another great video Tim! That was easier than I thought it would be. It looks like the outer needle bearings would also be easy to replace. Would they?

FWIW; I find fine grit Emory Cloth to be an excellent seal riding surface conditioner and cleaner for those microscopic imperfections in the surface. Sometimes, depending on the surface, a coarser grit used first then the fine grit works quicker. The seal surfaces should be hardened steel so lots of folks only use the coarser grit. Just a tip for your readers and YT watchers... I'm sure lots of people already know this.

That's a good question about the needle bearing. Unfortunately I didn't take the time to analyze the companion flange when I took it off so I don't know how involved it would be to replace the needle bearing. I do have a feeling though that Toyota probably doesn't sell just the needle bearing. You'd have to buy the whole companion flange.

In regards to using emory cloth on the shaft of the companion flange, I don't know if I would. I don't think it's so much of an issue of a surface like this getting rough. It's the fact that the seal wore a slight groove into the metal and now even a new seal might not get a leak-free connection with the flange due to the loss of metal. I think the one way you can combat this situation without replacing the companion flange is to purposely not drive the seal in as far as before to put the seal lip onto a different spot on the shaft that isn't compromised.

The 85 4runner is ready for battle. The engine still drinks oil but it runs well so I'll just keep driving it and carry oil around with me. I did a complete front axle service to try to fix a death wobble issue. Ends up the death wobble was due to improperly torqued leaf spring u-bolts so now the rig drives better and I now know how to tear apart the front axle. I also had a cold start issue I figured out. The cold start injector switch and the coolant temp sensor appeared to be bad and replacing both of them fixed the problem. I also added a steering stabilizer because when the hi-steer set-up was done to the rig, the guy who did the work didn't feel the need to add one. I bought a kit from Marlin Crawler and it appears to help a bit.

I haven't taken it out 4wheeling yet. I was suppose to go wheeling with a friend at the end of October but my body has failed me a bit and I've been off work. I'm getting pain in my right leg and it seems to be due to nerve impingement somewhere. Because of it, I can't walk very well or stand for a long time. But, I can ride a bicycle without any pain so that's good. My pain started at work so I did put in for a workman's comp claim but it hasn't been approved yet. I'm burning my own vacation time right now. I've been off work for 3 weeks now. Luckily I'm at an age that I can collect retirement so if I can't get back to work, I'll just retire and hopefully I get my body back working better. I'm a very active person and having to sit around the house doing next to nothing is killing me. I've seen lots of different docs, family practitioner, ortho doc, chiropractic, acupuncture and also massage. I've got a couple MRIs I'm going to get of my low back and my right hip and I'm also going to get an EMG neurological test done. I've lead a very active life and have worked very physical jobs and it's finally catching up to me. Oh well, life throws us challenges and I've got a pretty big one to tackle.

This is what happens when a PO gets a hole in the backplate and runs it out of gear grease. Took the pinion and ring gear out of it.

The videos are always great. I am just curious if they are going to do a 3rd member rebuild. I have a good one for a video..

A 3rd Member Rebuild is something I've heavily considered but haven't got the balls yet to try it. It would have to be on one of our own rigs or maybe a donor one I grab from PicknPull to practice on. Doing work on differentials is sort of an art and it's the reason a lot of experienced DIY mechanics shy away from it. There's a lot to get right, the pinion and ring gear meshing, the proper backlash and the proper pinion bearing preload. When you include into this installing an expensive locker, like an ARB air locker, you want to be damn sure you know what you're doing because you're risking some serious money. So, I'm not saying no, but i'm also not saying a definite yes either.

I don't see any casting damage. I do know the pinion bearing gear and ring are missing teeth it's that damaged.

You want to pull this out of the housing and send it too you?? I have the Vin of the vehicle it can out of 2001 [Green Sport] with 410 ratio. So it's not a Elocker.

As I probably will never rebuild it. We could even send you the entire housing but like I said it has a few pinholes in it that lost the gear oil.

It just be easier to ship the 3rd member then the entire housing too.

I can donate to you guys to practice on. However, that's up to you and your crew.

As my dad used to say “getting old sucks but the alternative really sucks”.
Been dealing with lower back issues and now left knee surgery that involved removing 40% of the meniscus.
Put 30 years in as Fire Investigator so opted for early retirement to deal with above issues as well as care for aging parent.
Had to put my Runner winter prep and other maintenance issues on hold till recovery is at a point where I can move without pain.
Anyhow.......best of luck to you finding someone in the medical profession that can help. That my friend has been another big challenge.

Been dealing with lower back issues and now left knee surgery that involved removing 40% of the meniscus.
Put 30 years in as Fire Investigator so opted for early retirement to deal with above issues as well as care for aging parent.
Had to put my Runner winter prep and other maintenance issues on hold till recovery is at a point where I can move without pain.
Anyhow.......best of luck to you finding someone in the medical profession that can help. That my friend has been another big challenge.

Similar situation here.
Wanted to wait till 59 at a minimum but pulled the plug at 55 as made the tough call that it was in my best interest for health and family.
No looking back now, my new mantra.......”it is what it is”

I subscribe to that mantra too. Life can be random and it can change in an instant. Over the course of my life I've had to get use to several "New Normals". I'm really hoping my new normal isn't living in constant pain.

Wow Tim, I wish ya the best. Think of it as a numbers game where you just have to keep plowing through the doctors of uninformed until one will figure it out. The lack of critical thinking and procedure today in the medical field can be scary at times.

FWIW my friend had nerve damage in his right leg (would go numb after standing) for close to a decade. They finally figured out that one nerve had been inflamed due to a torn muscle in his foot that he probably sustained twenty years before playing high school football.
