Pistol sights

I went to the range this morning and put about 150 rounds through the new XD9 and about 50 or so through my emp9. I noticed I was considerably more accurate with the emp9 than I was with the xd9. I know the emp is a higher quality gun but there's no reason why the xd can't be as accurate. At about 25 yards, I had a 4-6" shot pattern with the emp. The same distance with the xd9 my shot pattern was about 8-10 inches. I think it's due to the sights on the xd9 as I was using the same stance and fundamentals on both pistols. I noticed also that the xd9 was shooting a little to the left and I had to align the front dot on the sight post towards the right side of the rear sights. So... long story short, I'm looking for some new sights for the xd9.

My emp9 has trijicon night sights and I absolutely love them. I may put some on my xd. What sights are you pistol guys using that you're happy with?

TBH, all my pistols have their original sights. The Kimber came with tritium and the rest are your garden variety white dot types. I'm interested in some input too.

Were you running the same ammo in both guns?

If the gun came from the factory with those sites I would guess they are strait. Now, I'm not saying your doing anything wrong but not to often they are off. Before spending extra cash now some BA sites I would get a Lazer Bore Site. They are pretty inexpensive if you shop around and that will tell you where the barrel is at least.

I know on a pistol this is not a common thing to do but, if you think they are that far off I would try it at least, or take it to a reputable gun smith who already has one and a site tool to make an adjustments if needed and you might be out 75 bucks for his time. My .02. Good luck man!

I'm no expert shooter but if my shot groups are consistently to the left then my experience tells me it's a sighting issue. Now if my shot groups were all over the target then I would say its me. I did use Winchester ball rounds and some other Russian steel cased ball rounds. I got the same results with both. Like I said I'm no expert shooter but with my emp9 I was able to ring the bell at 50 yards with 1 out of 4 rounds. The bell was hung at the 50 yard range and was probably a 10 inch (maybe smaller) wide bell.

Once I started aligning the front sight post just right of middle on the xd9, my grouping came more into center. I don't think I'm pulling the gun or trigger while shooting because the groupings were consistently to the left until I started playing with the alignment of the front post. I do not have to do this with my emp9 and am getting consistent grouping.

Edit: maybe taking the pistol to a good shop may do some good. However, with some better sights I can also have faster target acquisition.

Tell me what you think. I use this as a teaching tool. It will tell on you almost every time. That and I throw in snap caps in a mag and watch(the shooter has no idea where they are). It tells allot about a shooter.

I have seen targets like that one. They are very good training tools as long as you learn how to apply the fundamentals of shooting. I'll follow your advice and take the gun to a shop and have them bore sight it and see if it's me or the pistol that's off. Either way I still want a new set of high visibility sights fr easier sightng and faster target acquisition.

I prefer novak 3 dot sights to anything. My carry gun has a tritium 2 dot rear, with a TFO front sight.
