Planning a back roads tour of NC

First off, I hope you all made it through the storm and are in full recovery mode now.

I am planning on spending a week next year traveling across North Carolina (west to east) and camping along the way. Any suggestions on must sees, great back roads, lake to play on, time of year, etc. I am anxious to explore the beauty of the state from mountains to coast. We’ll be driving down from Ohio so a northwestern entry to the state is best.

Any tips, maps, ideas will all be greatly appreciated.

I've heard great things about Hurricane Creek Trail just outside of Asheville and am working on planning my first trail ride up there later this spring. Start at I-40 and head up to Max Patch and enjoy the epic views. I believe there's also primitive camp sites available.

Also, do a little research on how you exactly find the trail head (this is a great explanation and worth the watch). Apparently it's easy to miss! Trail sounds like it's relatively easy but videos still make it look fun!
