Planning a Cross Country Trip, Any Tips?

I am planning to take a trip from Texas to Wisconsin later this summer in the ol' 97. This will be the first major road trip (over 3 hours) in my 4Runner. Probably not the smartest choice considering my Acura can do this trip with much less gasoline consumption, but you can't reason with 4Runner love.

Anyway- I've seen a lot of you guys here take long trips in your rigs. Any tips or pre-journey inspections I should make before departure? I don't plan on doing any "major" off-roading. I just don't want to get stuck in the middle of nowhere.

My rig has almost 225k on it now.

My family is doing a similar trip from GA to CO in August. Going to get it ready before we head out with some odds and ends- AC charged and the other usual things done for having 160K on the odometer.

The first thing that I would check would be the little plastic piece on your running board that I sent you =) How does it look man?!!?

Anyway, for serious now, when was the last time you did a general tune-up? Fluids, plugs, wires, that crap. I would check all of that stuff, and that's about it.

My pappy once said, "A well maintained vehicle with coolant, fuel, and oil will run until you tell it to stop."

If you're really worried, buy yourself a AAA membership. Make sure to get the upgraded one that has unlimited towing just in case something does happen. Just an idea, but good insurance if you spend alot of time on the road.
