Plasti Dip Wheels with Tires On or Off?

I have a set of limited 5 starts with no tires mounted. I was considering painting them black but I'm not sure if I'll like it so decided to plasti dip first to try it out.

My question is if I should dip them now without the tires or wait to get the tires mounted up and then hit them with the plasti dip?

I've done it and I recommend waiting until the tire shop has mounted the tires for you. Otherwise, you'll have to touch it up or completely redo it.

The best way is to have the tires mounted and have the balancing weights put on the back (tape on's).

Then when you get ready to paint, let the air out and break the bead out side beads, tuck index cards between the tire and wheel, tape/paper off the rest of the tire and paint.

Don't plasti-dip your wheels. Take the time to paint. Unless you don't expect it to last.

I sold this set pictured above, never mounted them myself. It was a good experiment to test the product. Decided I would not use PD on the set of wheels I'm running. I did use it on my stock frame rails for the roof rack. Worked great.

FYI, the wheels looked great. But, the PD was too sensitive to damage...IMO.

As others have said, do it after the tires are on. I agree plasti-dip isn't the greatest long term solution, but it's a great test material. Literally no prep besides cleaning the wheels and easy to remove once you decide on the final color. Go for it!

huh I've got mine muddy as hell and let it dry before. had the car wash power wand about 4" from it on high pressure. do it with the tires on.

Yep, no issues with mine either, plenty of mud and crap washed off with a wheel brush no prob. I used playing cards to mask off the area and went at it, easy to do and $20 makeover for my junky looking wheels.
