Plasti Dip

I'm a noob here, about 3 weeks into my first 4runner and have been more active on local facebook groups. I've found a couple posts where guys have Plasti-Dipped or wrapped the roof of their rigs to protect them from scratches, etc. with a roof rack or basket.

What I'm thinking about doing is a white roof like an FJ or old school Land Rover. I think they originally painted them that way to keep safari/expedition vehicles cooler in the desert and tropical climates. I just wanted to know what other Plasti Dip users thought of that idea and how difficult it would be to get a good result just using tape and spray cans. I've read that I should probably prime with matte grey Plasti Dip first if I want the gloss white to cover more uniformly (my 4runner is Nautical Blue Metallic).

I'm also hoping that if I end up completely hating it, I can just peel it off.

My dad had an old blue Land Rover when I was a kid -- many miles, many adventures. And yep afaik the white roof was a counter to the hot sun. I think a glossy white roof on your NBM body would look dope as hell.

I'm a kayaker and I have seen others with plastidip on the roof or a portion thereof to protect roof paint against boats and gear, especially tie-down cam buckles that can get thrown around. So it's absolutely a thing. Actually I'm considering doing it next spring in conjunction with installing a custom rack.

Just be sure to read ever plastidip thread you can find so you feel confident going forward. Every thread seems to have some guys with very successful results and some less so but if you read between the lines a bit you'll find the guys with success stories did their homework and took a methodical approach.

Proper cleaning/prep of the surface, proper taping/masking, using the product as directed (warm temp, clear nozzle, lots of shaking) and many light coats building into a pretty heavy coat seem to be key.

With friends we have Pastiest-dipped an FJ and an Xterra (several parts on each). We did it on a warm day with 4 coats...been super happy with results on both. I haven't tackled anything on the 4Runner yet, but it is on the list..
 
Gotta love Plastidip for the simplicity. I've been wanting to start dabbling in vinyl wrapping as well for the better durability and the add protection it offers.
 
Front and rear valences were super painless and I had them done in a couple of hours.

I just dipped every bit of chrome that I possibly could I my Limited. (WHY SO MUCH BLING?!)

But, I accidentally tore a corner of the dip while waxing. It got me thinking about the longevity/maintenance needed required to keep the chrome from popping through with every knick. Any tips on touching up the dip? I've already put a little paint thinner on my finger and smoothed it out. But I really don't feel like prepping the vehicle to re-spray.
 
Just got a new-used 4Runner with Shadow Grey paint. Thinking about using Plasti Dip on the wheels, I actually really like the stock wheels on mine but I know they would look better in black.
