Hi Everyone,
I recently (last week) picked up my 96 4runner, 216k mi, 5 speed. I noticed something odd over the last few days. When the truck warms up, it starts to sound like I have an egg-timer in the guage cluster. It's hard to describe the sound, but it's low frequency and is kind of a tocktocktocktocktock sound. I normally dont care about a truck with a bunch of miles making funny noises, but this is getting louder and isn't your standard "used truck" sound.
I poke around with a mechanic's stethescope under the hood and the only thing I found that has the same frequency of popping noise is the fuel canister, but it's very faint and can't be heard with the stethescope right on it. My sound seems like the sound is coming from behind the guage cluster or in the firewall somewhere. Is there a fuel filter or fuel pump buried underneath there that could be causing the issue?
RPM's dont seem to matter, speed and load dont seem to matter.
I'm going to perform some exploratory surgery today, but in the meantime, anyone ever heard of this? Anything to look for specifically?
