Possible Manual Transmission for T4R?

I am trying to find out if it is at all possible to swap the transmission in a 2007 4runner SR5 V6 2WD. I don't even know if a manual transmission for a T4R even exists but I thought if I'd find out anywhere I'd find out here.

2007 T4R (AKA Stunner.) Pioneer AVIC-930BT Aftermarket Nav, Kicker CompVR124 Subwoofers, 2 Kicker ZX500.1 Amps. 3.5 Farad Cap in the middle. 6k HID projectors and fogs. LED accents running in between, and Full hyper-LED ground effects Light package with Strobe.

I'm pretty sure that the 4th gen never came with a manual. You could look at doing a swap from a tacoma or fJ cruiser and then you would get the advantage of a 6 speed. Good luck with your search.

If i could change one thing about my 4R it would be to have a 6 speed manuel transmission. I support you doing the swap!

Nope the 4th gen was only sold with an auto, honestly though thats ok as the aisin manual trans (think FJ) that would have gone in it is such a POS it would be horrible, but I was contemplating doing a built T56 swap in my truck.

This is a mod I have thought about aswell and would love to do one day (after a SAS), definatly keep us posted on what you find as I am sure there is alot of interest in this one.

Manual's are fun to drive...this is the first automatic I've owned in 25 years. But Auto's do have some nice advantages...Besides the easier to drive part.....Auto's are far better for towing. You can tow more and it's just easier. With a manual tranny you just went from Class III towing capacity to Class II.

There's a lot more involved then just swapping the tranny out. The ECU is different for auto's and manuals. You'll have to swap that also. And also expect resale value to drop like a stone.

Agreed to that last two comments. Manual transmissions are fun in a sports car, and do better on MPG; but for towing and power AUTO's make a lot of sense. In particular, today's AUTO's that are more reliable.

The truth is, due to hydraulic power magnification, our trucks are able to pull more and manage better torque numbers due to the automatic tranny.

As for off-roading. I am torn. I have wheeled with both. The AUTO's do provide a TON of delicate control, again, due to how they are designed.

But.. if you are on your game; a manual will always manage very fine control. At a cost though... I have to say, the torque magnification you get from an AUTO is very nice.

Even if you got a manual from an FJ, you'll have to make a pedal system (one out of the FJ may work), as well as getting the hydraulic system in place in the engine bay and the plumbing that goes with that... It'd be a big task. You may want to just buy and FJ with a stick and get it over with if you're serious about going stick.

I was talking to my buddy who drives a modded Taco and we both were saying how awesome it is to drive an auto for once! This is the first auto I've ever bought and love it. My 3rd gen runner had a 5-speed manual and I hated it in that truck. However, I had a 6-speed manual in my '04 Audi S4 and wouldn't dare get an auto in that car. You know what, I think I'm just getting old and like an auto now . Funny how that works…

There are pics of a white 4th Gen with a 2j and v160 trans its sick. 6 speed v160 getrags are available new for about 6k. They are tougher than any autos in our trucks, a340s included.

why couldnt you swap an R154 into a 4runner? They use the R154 on the Xrunner.

The R154 5speed is a pretty stout transmission. It can easily handle upwards of 450 HP.

Understandable, but hes not gonna be Rockcrawling in a 4runner.....at least I hope not

Good point, as far as off roading goes here in Kansas there's not a lot of options.

I was also pondering the idea of throwing a Taco 5-speed in my truck and I was mocked, all in good humor, but the mockery also brought up a great point. The amount of money that you would have to throw at this mod is totally not worth it. I LOVE the 4Runners and will only buy a 4Runner in the future (as a primary vehicle. 66 Ford F-100 with a 342 stroker is what I'm saving for), but I would rather buy an FJ or a Taco, than have to spend about $10,000 on a transmission that will be more of a hassle in day-to-day life.

It is a cool thought, but I'll leave the 5-speed in my F-100 :driving:

I agree. It's not even a payoff. It's a lose-off because you spend more than twice the cost of a snazzy TRD supercharger
