Possibly getting a locker... quick question first

So I found a guy selling his rear axle with locker as well as the front diff both geared 4:56.

i asked him what years it would fit and he said 90-98...

3rd gens are 96-02... do 2nd and 3rd gens share the same rear axle and front diff??

He has the years mixed up or don't know what he is talking about. 2nd gens don't share the same front diff or rear housing as the 3rd gen.

Ha, I was not too long ago looking at that craigslist ad myself... 4.56 gears is what I'd love to put in my rig! Unfortunately, I don't have the money to buy them from him. Good luck, bro!

So the guy said that they say 91 on them but they came off a 98... i think he thinks the year is stamped on the diffs...
 
another question: what do i check for on the axles? he says they have 250k miles on them... which is a lot. is there a way for me to see if the axle seals have been done? should i get that work done on the rear before i put it in my truck?

I would do that and the rear brakes before putting the axle on the truck, easy to do beforehand, and then you know it's good.
 
^ What he said. I'd take the thirds in for a onceover, too. If not to be rebuilt, at least to have the preload and backlash checked.

how much would a shop charge for this? if its anywhere close to doing a regear i rather just regear my own axle... the point of this would be to get it cheap...

This is why I don't have the money... Just had my rear axle seal replaced (one side was bad) and both drum brakes. Definitely worth to do that before putting the axle in place!

It shouldn't be anywhere near a regear. Assuming the diffs are already out of the vehicle, it oughta be maybe a 1/2hr of shop time? If you jump on your local offroad board and send up a bat signal, it might be more like a 12pack of somebodies favorite brew.

And if something did turn out to be out of spec, wouldn't you rather know the easy way? :)

Ask him for a closeup. That's definitely a 7.5 diff ('86-'95), and both those carriers have some kinda cabling or hose that isn't stock... air lockers?

maybe... except for it says factory rear locker... i saw that cabling and thought it was for the elocker..

Okay, lemme rephrase. If the front diff in the picture is right side up, it's a passenger side drop. That's what makes me think it's a 1st/2nd gen diff. And I still don't know what all the wires/hoses are for, is that ADD stuff? I'm just a simple caveman, I don't know your 3rd-gen ways...

If that stuff is what he says it is, and it's in good shape, it's a screaming awesome deal. You can't get an elocker 3rd by itself for 450 around here, and that's a complete axle hub to hub, plus a complete front diff. That's what makes me wonder if the dude even knows what he's got. I'd put eyeballs on it up close before committing any money.

Thanks Kid i appreciate your input and knowledge. the guy didn't seem like a complete noob... and he said it came out of a 98. but steezemcqueen is right... there's no elocker motor on top of the diff...

i'm going to ask him to send me a close up picture of the rear...

are you SURE the front diff won't work?

anyone else have some input?
