Possibly purchasing 87 22re auto

I Am goin to go look at 87 with a auto trans. Looked at a couple of different sites and was wondering if the auto really takes away power from the motor? Are there any plus or mins to it? Thanks

I've owned the Auto A340 with 4.88 gears 32" tires and Standard G52 with 4.88's 34" tires. The difference is best seen off road. Both has it's good's and bad's. The auto crawls well but easily pulls the motor down when under loads. Almost like the fuel is being cut off. The standard is harder to crawl over obstacles, but has better power and unlike the auto you can pick the gear along with low range. Not like the auto where you must start in 1st from a stop. The standard even pulling larger tires would get better gas milage and would go faster than the smaller tired auto. What do I think is better? What works for you... Currently I am converting back to auto for the wife.

Yes, without a doubt. My last truck was a 22RE/auto on 33s with 5.29 gears, and my current truck is 22RE/manual with the exact same tires and gearing, and the difference is night and day. The auto is a slug - fine for scooting around town and flying down the freeway, but the tiniest little hill or headwind will drop your torque converter out of lockup and you'll bog down and have to scoot for the slow lane. Bigger tires makes it worse, of course. With the manual I can pull long grades at 70mph that had my automatic truck dropping to 40-45mph, it's that big a difference.

Stock for stock, I think the auto beats the 5 speed off road. You only need two feet, and the slushbox lets you nose up on an obstacle and just ease into throttle into the wheel pops up. That's harder to do while slipping a clutch and balancing brake and throttle. But a 5speed with lower transfer case gears or a doubler crawls just like butter, and gives you the benefit of better gearing reduction control when descending, where with the auto you have to ride the brake more.

I'd say around 15-16 MPG with 22re auto is what I found

Mine is a 87 22re/auto, stock gears, 31 inch tires and get 15 mpg city street, 17 mpg mixed and 20 mpg freeway, i still love my auto trans, and as said above offroading gets really easy with it.

Oh no! Research more before you decide on auto. Else, you'll be stuck with it
