My "E" rated tires aren't for driving faster than 85 mph, don't go faster than 75 due to abysmal gas mileage.

Virginia is the worst. I've traveled a lot of miles on I-81, and there were so many times that I got passed by someone doing at least 15 over only to see them pulled over a few miles up the road. I never speed in Virginia, too expensive and not worth the time either when you get pulled over, because it's going to happen.
Yeah I don't really speed on the interstate either in my 3rd gen. I'm pretty sure every MPH over 70 drops my MPG by one as well.

In both 4runners I run Escort 8500's with the blue display. They are mounted on countryjoycrafts.com radar detector mounts. Both of them are hardwired into key-on power. In the 5th gen I also have the Escort Live module. They work perfect IMHO. In my experience, if you stand long enough on the skinny pedal, you can achieve ticket status in both 4runners.

All my friends swear by Valentine 1. I think it's crap, antique technology. Sure it may detect better, but no new technology like GPS, voice, automatic location based marking of false alarms, not worth it.
In the 10 years that I have owned a detector, encountered true laser literally only a handful of times. The rest of the time, radar speed traps were easily detected.

LiDAR (instant on laser) is pretty much all we use with the exception of moving radar. The easiest way to beat laser is to not have a front license plate or large headlights, that makes it tough to lock the laser onto the front of a car. Also, we can take your detectors: https://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp504.exe?000+cod+46.2-1079 and it's tough to get them back. As stated above, at least in Virginia, your best bet is not to speed.

I have an Escort 8500 and from my experience X-band is completely worthless, K-band is used by local cops and the side of the road "Your going xx mph"signs, and the highway patrol used Ka-band. The laser goes of when I drive by the airport sometimes and by certain random antenna towers and it scares the shit out of me every time since it goes off at full volume (though it makes sense based on how laser works). Anyway I second your point. The only time I encountered laser that was actually a cop was a California Highway Patrol vehicle. I have yet to install the unit in my 4Runner, but those hardwired pics look clean, so I might have to do that.

What's the difference between the red and blue display other than the color?
They're starting to use them in The People's Republic of Massachusetts, except with a twist...
It's common for everyone to go about 75 (in a 65), which means to pass someone safely, you need to be going 80 ish. (Since we have our share of left lane hogs, and tree huggers with Prius' and attitudes who never get ticketed, sometimes it can be a real pain to get over to the right lane to exit...but I digress...)
However, this is what (some cops) do now to meet their quotas...eh, I mean "performance goals". When they see someone going slightly more than keeping up with traffic, they pull you over and claim you're going "just over 90" and they clocked you on laser. They tell you that because going that fast is felony speeding, and they could arrest you and impound your car, which of course they explain to you in detail...BUT, since they're your buddy, your pal, your bum chum, they'll reduce it to 80 and "let you go" (whenever they stumble upon a new technique to raise supplemental road tax, like tailgating, they tell each other).
This has happened to several people I know. They do this so you're afraid to fight the ticket.
I basically have a surveillance package. I use a Cobra Atom radar detector, connected to the internet with iRadar, and Waze, and also a dashboard video camera with a camera facing out the back of the truck, and a camera facing the drivers door. I trust nobody. Even though I haven't been pulled over since the 20th century, I had too many bad experiences with oath breakers in my youth. Man, I went on a 4 hour round trip on Memorial Day weekend with my girlfriend, and Waze alerted us to every single one of the 27 speed traps we drove through.
It's called "Selling the ticket". You're supposed to feel like you got a break, so you won't be as likely to fight it.
This is EXACTLY when you want to fight it and they won't show(or submit their Trial by Declaration paperwork).
In your trial by declaration, you plead not guilty. And then you challenge them by asking them what speed they actually clocked you at. You can repeat their statement of "they clocked you on laser just over 90", and said you believed that they make a mistake. You can even mention that you had a recording device in the car (you don't have to claim that you had used it tho.... and almost everyone of us truly have such a device with us all the time - your phone!!). Now, if he indeed clocked you over 90, your ticket should state that you are at 90something (they don't have the right to arbitrarily make up some numbers and *help* you reduce the charge); if your ticket stated that you are at 80something, then he don't have the evidence of it. Either way, they are not likely to follow-thru with their side of the paperwork.
