Potential 4gen 4runners

Hello all, in the market for a 4gen. Still working on selling my 3rd gen at the moment.

I have found 2 that I am interested in, both very clean.

2004- white- 135000 miles- v8- 4x4- asking 13,500
2007- silver- 89000- v6- 4x4- asking 18000

I am leaning towards the v6 mainly for the gas mileage. I don't foresee needing the additional power of the v8.

Opinions welcome.

Personally I love the V8. If you count my fathers 08 my family has 3 of them and the Sport is my favorite.
 
If it was me and my money i would go for the 2007 v6.

That 07 looks clean as long as there are no issues with it.

Nearly 50k miles less, 3 years newer, 3 years less rust/wear. The newer redesign of the 4th gen (03-05 was version 1 ads 06-09 was version 2) which addressed some mechanical issues and updated the look a bit. If you don't need the v8 you get increased mileage with the v6 while still getting adequate power and torque to tow if needed. You also get the option to turn off 4wd versus the v8 full time.

If they're asking 18 (which is reasonable if it's clean) you can probably get them down to 16-17.

Find out how long they've had it for sale. It's at a dealer so they don't want it to sit on the lot very long. Any longer than 30 days and they're desperate to sell it. Silver is a great color and easy to resell. If they can't come down on the price, try negotiating new tires or pads/rotors into the price.
 
I am biased and say the 2004 Sport V8 would be the way to go *provided* you can get them to come down a bit in Price. $13.5K is definitely on the high end even for one in good shape.

For reference, I paid $ 10K personal sale on my white 2004 sport in good shape. It had roughly the same miles.
 
Thanks for the input. I Did a lot more research last night and I am now leaning towards the v8. It seems there is potential to get close to the same mpg. It seems like the 4.7 is also a lot smoother and quieter thAn the 4.0. Those prices are honestly pretty low for area, Colorado springs. I may try to hold out a bit longer to see if anything else comes on the market.
 
So your willing to pay close to 5k just to save about 1k in gas of 5 years into owning it? I was in your shoes. I beleive most used v8 owners were. I have no regrets getting the v8. And glad I did not get a v6. Especially if your going to lift and tires. You will waste gas just pushing the vehicle with a v6.

yup, what he said.. if I had to do it all over again I'd have two V8 Toyota BOF SUV's in my garage, not v6's... and they probably wouldn't even be 4Runners.. they'd be a 10-15 year old land cruiser and 8-12 year old GX470 (Prado) if I had to do it all over again.... GX470's are so easy to find almost all are mall crawlers which means they're lightly lightly used. Find one of those from 2002-2005 south of the mason dixon line, would be the route I'd take.

and if you don't think a GX470 can be a bad ass offroad vehicle, let this sway your opinion, "Blue Steel" GX470 Expedition Build | IH8MUD Forum . They are just as, if not more capable than the 4Runner offroad and way more comfortable onroad. (imo)
 
If it was me I would get the V6 just because it's 3 years newer and has 50k fewer miles on it, as well as the upgrades Toyota did in 05-06.

Funny how when gas is cheap people here say "you won't notice the MPG difference with the V8" and then a few months later when gas prices go back up, seems like the same people are right here saying "my MPG sucks, what can I do?" :crybaby:

I got the V6 for the simpler reason that I didn't need the V8. I was coming from a 3rd gen with the anemic (but reliable) 3.4 and I knew that even the 4.0 would feel like a rocket compared to that little 3.4.

18k does seem a little high for that '07 though. I got an '07 SR5 2 1/2 years ago and paid $19k for it, and I thought the price was high then (I had set an $18k "ceiling" on my price but was willing to pay more to get the color I wanted - SRP/Maroon.) I think at $15k/$16k that would be a bargain.
 
The Colorado market is pretty strong right now. I just picked one up from 850 miles away, just to get a better deal. Couldn't find anything local in Colorado that I liked.
 
I have the same mindset as I did when gas was 4 bucks a gallon. Sure its nice to spend 40 instead of 80 bucks to fill up. But I also can spare an additional 30 bucks a month to own a v8 vs v6.. Nothing bad about the v6 I still kind of miss my 3rd gen. However I dont miss flooring it when I need to pass on the freeway and struggle through camping trips to the sierras at 6000ft elevation.

OP it all depends if you want to leave it stock or where you live.. Flat lands vs elevated. Lift, tires, load, and take it into consideration. Looks like you did research and leaning towards the v8.

I did the same research and concluded that the only benefit the v6 having is saving a couple mpg per gallon. Dont let the timing belt and chain thing persuade you. Timing belts are in most vehicles. Its just a part of maintenance. Also not a big deal if you are mechanically inclined. To me its a matter of having the time to do it. Lucky mines was changed by the dealer 20k miles ago before I bought it.. I did not know it at the time of purchase either.
 
The big question ... have you driven either vehicle or any 4th gen v6/v8 for that matter? I only ask because you should probably hold off deciding until you've had experience with both so that you can make an educated decision.

When I was looking, I wanted the v6 but test drove the v8 to see the difference. I was more than happy with the power of the v6 and preferred the fuel economy which I would notice every day versus the extra power that I would rarely if ever need. I don't own a boat, I don't tow a heavy trailer, I don't need to overtake anyone on the highway any faster than I already can. The v6 has been great for me but then again those are my needs.

Colorado is going to be an inflated market for SUV's because everyone thinks they need them out there. There's a lot of offroad/outdoors/camping/cycling/kayaking etc immediately nearby so everyone seems to drive a Subaru, 4runner, jeep or xterra. The other thing is that 4runners are one of the last remaining body on frame SUVs really capable of going off road while also getting reasonable gas mileage and having a very long lasting motor. If you're absolutely sold on the Sport models then you are going to pay a little more than you would an SR5 which has basically all the same features minus the wheels and cosmetic hood scoop. I've seen equivalent SR5's for $14k fairly often around here (chicago) so maybe just hold out and the right one will come along, or bargain a little harder for the one you want. While 4runners hold their value, a $15-20k 7 year old vehicle with close to 100k miles isn't really going to fly out the door. Go in low and see what happens. The least they will do is say no. The best that will happen is they lower the price.
 
Picked mines up for 7500 with 140k on it. I had to overlook the filthy condition and a couple scratches. Heck I see vehicles like this all the time at Manheim. Dealers take it to the detail.. However the price at the auction are inflated for these vehicles also.. Make that for all toyota and lexus. :/ I got mines from a private party less than the sale history at the auction.

People have the old school 1990's thought that toyota and honda's make the most reliable vehicles. Most vehicles produces after the year 2000 are reliable and almost always reach 200k miles with basic maintenance. People my age who never serviced vehicles grew up in the 90's feel the need for honda and toyota.

I got my 3rd gen on accident. and Grown to love it that is why I opted for the 4th gen.
 
Out of those two, I'd go with the silver (Titanium Metallic) one... looks like a nice 4Runner! I might be slightly biased though!

I wouldn't worry about the V6 vs. V8... I haven't had any issues with power (even at this altitude) with the mods that I have. And I think that the reality of the V6 vs. V8 fuel economy is not as close between the two as we read. I'm getting ~17mpg (calculated... 18.3 on the dash) and the V8 guys I know are closer to 13-14mpg with less mods than I have. So many factors contribute to the actual MPGs that you get so it's difficult to do exact comparisons, but this is what I've witnessed.

Like others have said, go drive both and go with what feels right to you.

Yes the 4runners in Colorado are ridiculously overpriced.

Yes I have driven both engines, and I can see the v6 struggling on the mountain passes. That is i think it would be downshifting very often.

I want a Sport for the following reasons: sport hood( I love it) , bigger wheels, and most of all the X-reas.

I am specifically looking for an 05+ sport v8 white.

Found the one below but it is still pricey.

I called on the silver v6, but the dealer is a " no haggle " dealer, so they won't budge on price. I laughed and said okay. The white one already has a buyer.

Twanger, let me know. I'd like to take it for a test drive this weekend if still available. Ill be coming up from the Springs.
