Powder Coating Sport Edition Wheels

Got some sport edition wheels that I might powder coat. . .

Should I powdercoat them Matte black or Matte grey?

Leave them stock?

Sell them and buy TRD wheels?

What would you do?

I'm leaning towards the gray, but the reality is that down the road I'll sell these when I'm done with them and if majority prefer black, maybe I'll have them done in black for resale purposes.

Sell them and get what you want. Between the cost savings of the powder coat and sale of the old rims you should pay for them no problem.

I doubt 10 year old sport ed wheels are worth as much as powdercoating. Of course it depends on where you live.

I'd see if I could get $200 for them and put that towards TRD wheels.
 
Do a little searching on these TRD rims. I think they look really awesome, but a lot of members turned away from them because of their width. 7 inches i think.... Just some friendly advice.
 
also, i like your 4runner... thats a good color. :)

Look at plasti-dipping too.... it really does work, i was skeptical for a few months, then bit the bullet and bought about 10 cans or it. They only need minor touch ups when you get new tires, and they are more resistant than you think.

I just picked up a set of real nice OEM 17" rims for my sport. The rims were wrapped with Bridgestone Blizzak's that only had one season on them....I paid 400 for the package.
 
Plasti-dip then paint over the dip. Will last until you take it off. Done it several times.

Mine were 200 to powder coat. I went with flat black FJ rims on my silver T4R, but bunmetal might look really nice. Buy..... I'd rather have those TRD wheels than any aftermarket wheels.

Funny, I had read that the TRD wheels are 7", but it just occurred to me that the sport wheels (as wheel as the stock SR5 wheels) are 7.5 inches wide!

I'm still leaning towards powder coating. . .sounds kind of stupid, but as much as I like the TRD wheels or the FN "TRD" wheels, it would be much easier to clean brake dust off the sport editions!
 
i think i would leave them if you decide to keep the wheels, or what one of the members said. dip and then paint so it isnt permanent.

I didn't powdercoat. I took them to the powdercoating place and he talked me out of doing it! Saying he probably wouldn't be able to meet my expectations. At least he was honest. I figured it wasn't worth it. I like them enough just the way they are. The wheels are a nice contrast against the black tires IMO.

Still like the matte gray look, but it's not worth dropping $65-75 a wheel. And at least for now it's not worth my time. Though if I did anything at all, I'd plastidip and paint. Plastidip is FUN!

Can I ask what color is on "sparky" 4Runner sport wheels ? I'm looking to get my limited wheels redone as I have had them PC'd once and am not very happy with the color as it didn't turn out as well as the swatch I picked from. I'm not sure whether to sell and buy the TRD or FN F/X Pro. The color of my '08 T4R SE is Salsa Red Pearl. Was wanting a dark grey look to blend with step tubes and top rails

I used rust oleum hammered gray Rust-Oleum Stops Rust 12 oz. Protective Enamel Hammered Gray Spray Paint-7214830 - The Home Depot

Since that original post I have removed all one time and ran none for awhile. did again with hammered dark bronze, didn't like it as much as gray. Sprayed over the bronze with gray and been running that for 2.5 year now

I painted my sport edition wheels satin black. I carefully used aircraft stripper to get the clear coat off the wheel then sandblasted them to give them an even texture and possible help adhesive of the spray paint. If i were to do it again, I probably wouldn't mess with the aircraft stripper or sandblaster, just scratch up the clear coat and prime and paint. It would definitely be ten times easier and faster. Heres a pic of mine with the rustoleum satin black if you still are deciding.

Sparky how many cans and how many coats did you apply?
