well crap. this would come up at the worst time. I plan on doing this to my truck eventually anyway. That price doesn't seem unreasonable considering an '02 t4r will run you anywhere from $7-11k and then a good quality swap from an experienced shop (ie. dieseltoyz) will run you close to $15k unless you do it yourself. anyone want to buy my truck to help me fund this? :naughty:

As rickashay said, there are more reasons to purchase other than economy. Torque, the ability to run alternative fuels etc. Also, like he said, I am sure 30mpg's is not out of reach with a good tune. I had a mkIV jetta tdi with a good tune and some bolt ons that was regularly getting over 60mpg's highway. Diesels respond EXTREMELY well to proper modifications

I have an ALH TDI in a mkiv jetta with a tune and injectors, and while i have achieved 55mpg, it really wasnt something to be seen often, unless the a taller 5th gear is involved or you are hypermilling. The ALH is a far better motor than the 3.0TD, and what you are forgetting is that the ALH VW TDI is by far one of the easiest small diesels to get tuning for, i know off the top of my head 5 tuners for them, and very large aftermarket support compared to other diesels, and thats besides the fact that it is an easy motor to work on and its rather simple.

From what i have gathered the the 3.0TD isn't the most efficient motor, and i never see anyone dropping them into anything other than a 4runner, where as i see the 4BT Cummins, 2.8 Isuzu, the 4 banger nissan diesel, the vw diesels, the 5 cyl mercedes all being swapped into other cars like jeeps, land rovers, toyotas, nissan's, and fords as they are great motors with easy tunability and provide excellent fuel economy.

The torque yeah it's good, but you could just Supercharge the 3.4l for $2-$3k get all that torque, be much quicker than the diesel and still have $5-$8k left over for other stuff.

I would swap to an oil burner in a heatbeat, just not that one. :bigok:
