oh man the things i will do to get that thing, embarrassing embarrassing thing!
Problem is that motor doesnt get 30mpg, as i have collected numbers for many years of british members, and the canadian members who have these trucks, and the highest number i have heard is 25 US mpg highway, and that was for a stocker, this thing is lifted on larger tires, with alot of weight, i can't imagine its pulling more than 20-21mpg highway, which is exactly what i am doing, and i know some lifted 4Runners with ARB's 33's roof racks that get 18mpg, so this all together is a waste, besides the fact that you sh*t out of luck if you want to get it serviced.
When I was looking for 4 runners (before I purchased my 2000 this past week) I seriously considered this diesel 4 runner and talked with the owner several times. After talking with him and seeing the water cooled intercooler (dont like them for daily drivers my self) as well as a few other things I did the math and it wasnt worth it.
I figured up the mileage I drive per year and at current fuel prices (gas is roughly 60 cents cheaper than diesel currently) it would take almost 9 years for me to break even between the added fuel costs and the extra $8500 I would have paid for the diesel over what I was looking to pay and eventually paid for my 4 runner. Add into this I bought a loaded limited model vs his which is basicly pw and pl and consider how difficult it is to get the diesel related parts since it never came in the USA and its a no brainer.
I also have to say his claims of 28mpg are very hard to believe. There are several guys on the internet that state mpg for these vehicles and most claim around 20-22 avg. I get 19-20mpg hwy and 16-18mpg city in my 3.4L and again gas is roughly 60 cents cheaper per gallon here in Tx.
I have a small side buisness doing diesel conversions so I can easily swap a readily available isuzu diesel or cummins 3.3 or many other options into my 4 runner for much less than the $8500 difference.
I'm not bashing the guy he's just trying to get what he thinks the vehicle is worth and I can't fault him for that since it appears to be a nice truck but you almost never sell these kinda vehicles for what you have into them, hence why I do the conversions instead of selling whole vehicles.
what's with the shifters on his truck?
I've never seen the manual shifter on the right like that, let alone manual with multimode.
Not a US transmission I assume.
The only things that diesels respond well too is boost and more fuel.well crap. this would come up at the worst time. I plan on doing this to my truck eventually anyway. That price doesn't seem unreasonable considering an '02 t4r will run you anywhere from $7-11k and then a good quality swap from an experienced shop (ie. dieseltoyz) will run you close to $15k unless you do it yourself. anyone want to buy my truck to help me fund this? :naughty:
As rickashay said, there are more reasons to purchase other than economy. Torque, the ability to run alternative fuels etc. Also, like he said, I am sure 30mpg's is not out of reach with a good tune. I had a mkIV jetta tdi with a good tune and some bolt ons that was regularly getting over 60mpg's highway. Diesels respond EXTREMELY well to proper modifications
