Price difference in a 2WD to a 4WD 3rd gen. 4runner

I have been trying to sell my car for a long time now. 1997 limited 4runner, 2wd, fully loaded, 159k miles. And i can't seem to get any takers. When ever i get a call i will give them the sales pitch and the next question they ask is "is it 4 wheel drive?".

What would you say is a solid price difference in the same exact 4runner, but one is 2WD and the other is 4WD?

I know that most of it goes off who your selling it too and their needs and also the location is a huge part of it as far as weather and the wealth of a certain area.

I Kbb.com it and the 4WD was actually less. It was nothing huge just $5 less then the 2WD.

Anybody have a solid answer?

Look on CL or Autotrader.com to see what others are asking and price accordingly.

Hate to say it, but I would never buy a 2wd SUV. What's the point? Better to have a small FWD car, at least it will do better in the snow.

Maybe if I lived in Florida or South Texas and never, ever went off road, but other than that, I wouldn't spend the $$ on one.

To be honest, I didn't even know Toyota made 2wd 4runners until about 1996. I was working for a security company and one of the places we had to check was a Toyota dealership in Charlotte. I happened to walk by a new 4runner and shined my flashlight inside. I saw the transmission shift lever but no lever for the T-case. I thought "That's odd, where's the T-case shift lever?" Then I went to the front of the truck and looked at the front wheels - sure enough, no half-shaft.

I thought "well, whaddaya know, it's a 2wd 4runner! Learn something new every day!"

Well, regarding your opening statement of trying to sell your car, we don't call 4runners cars, that is a big taboo. But, to answer your question, the 4wd should increase, not decrease, the value of the vehicle. But for that old of a vehicle, the difference is probably negligible. Most people who are looking for a 4runner want 4wd, ...., as was said, if not 4wd, then what's the point?

Here in Atlanta, 4 WD sell for more, but not a lot more. For your year maybe $500 to a $1,000. I see you live in Washingtion state and I would think 90% of all 4Runners up there are 4 WD. My suggestion is, if you have an ad, be sure to mention it is 2 WD, that way you won't get all those phone calls. Someone out there will appreciate your 4Runner.

Of course moving to Atlanta or maybe southern CA, someone would snatch it up a lot easier.

I just bought a 96 4wd with 150k miles on Saturday, and spent the previous week shopping. I did notice that whenever I saw an ad on craigslist, autotrader or cars.com that was 2wd, the seller was generally asking anywhere from $1000-2000 less than what the asking price was for a comparable 4wd. In CO, and probably anywhere else that gets snow, 2wd is a big negative.

yeah man, you should being from the wa, and esp with the winter weather we're having right now, people are looking for that 4wd option to get around on the icy roads, if you have to sell it right now your going to be at a loss, i'd wait for summer when the whole 4wd thing isn't on the front of everyones minds.

i would never ever buy a 2wd suv in washington state, but that's me. typically i see 2wd models going for about 1.5-2k cheaper in the pnw, use the advice above pretend your shopping for a new 4runner and price match what YOU find on the CL for 2wd 4runners. it might now hurt to post your ad on an OR. or CA. Craigslist post and see if you can get more, they like the 2wd in Ca. more so than here you can always say no or it's not worth it, if it costs you $300-500 to get it down there but you sale it for 1K more it's a win.... but hey i'm just throwing ideas out there to give you a hand man, you need to do what's best for you, just keep in mind that most of the time 2wd will be worth less than 4wd

If I remember correctly I paid about 1000 extra for 4WD when I bought my 2001 new. I figured it would keep most of that value.

At the time of the purchase i figured i got really good deal on the 4runner. Now i want it sold and my plan is to actually buy another 3rd gen 4runner but with 4WD. Thanks for the idea about posting it in Oregon or California, I might give that a shot.

On all my ads i posted that it was 2WD, but for some reason they still ask ???

One guy called and was like "hey its not really 2WD you're just saying that so people call you right?"
