Problem Ordering a 2014 Trail w/KDSS

I placed a Buyers Order back on March 25 2014 for a Super White Trail with KDSS. I am wondering if what the dealer has done (or not done) is normal at this stage two months later...

Every time I contact him to see if Toyota has accepted or rejected the allocation request he gives me the old nothin yet and says he'd be happy to refund my deposit if I'm unhappy. Initially he said he would have a response from Toyota within 2 weeks max and I am wondering if theres something unusual about my situation.

I was thinking of going out of state to find the vehicle I want but we've purchased vehicles from this dealer before and they were great to deal with, they're close to where I live, gave me a pretty good price on the new 4runner (about $3500 under MSRP), and will include a lifetime powertrain warranty for free. Since we do a bunch of saltwater fishing and hunting and intend on keeping the 4Runner for a long time figured it might come in handy in the long run.

Anyone else experience this kind of wait time or problem when ordering their 4runner or have suggestions of how to get some answers?

Waiting on 4R

Stick with it. Ask for the VIN number, it already has it, and he should also, and theyshould know exactly when it will hit the port.
I took delivery 3 weeks ago, 2014 SR5 - 4WD, only options, sliding deck and the NAV package. Four weeks from time I ordered,
and they probably found it at another dealer. Late date production.
If they gave you that much off MSRP, not too bad.

Sounds like when I ordered my 2011. Eventually the salesman said they couldn't get one, then about 20 minutes later he said they had one coming in, but in the color that was my second choice...and by the way, the wanted to up the price by $800.
Made some phone calls and had one purchased the next day, at a price low enough to have it shipped to me and still saved $50.

I placed a deposit for my order in mid-March and still have not taken delivery of the truck. From my understanding dealers are unable to change an allocation's exterior/interior colors. They are able to easily add/delete port installed options. They can put in a request to Toyota requesting the specs a customer desires, but until then it is just that, a request with the customer hanging in limbo. It may not be this way for all Toyota distributors, but from my experience it is for the Southeast.

Yes, this is normal. Feel free to search through my post history.

Wait a lifetime powertrain warranty for FREE!?! Stick with the dealer that is a nice option they threw in especially since you sound as though you will be using it.

Thanks for all of the responses they are extremely helpful.

NODAK : I've requested the salesman send me a Vehicle Inquiry report. Thank you so much for linking me to your thread. I actually asked for it over a month ago and the salesman seemed to have been caught off guard and never produced it. Then he just told me it might be a good idea to cancel the order if I'm frustrated...so I'm not sure yet if he ever actually put the order in maybe he was just waiting for a swap and locate. Gonna go have a chat with him in person this week so I can lay eyes on the order document or talk to the manager.

Waco: Least I know I'm not the only one but there definitely is a lack of communication in my case and I noticed you heard back from the dealer that the order was accepted by Toyota around the 6 week mark I'm approaching week 9 and still nothing...

Lifetime warranty was a pretty good incentive to buy from them though you have to have the vehicle serviced there for its entire life and its a non-transferrable warranty. I plan on putting the 4R t work so its a nice insurance policy.

I'll post updates as they come.

Thanks Again Everyone

that warranty sounds fishy as in 3rd party and not an actual Toyota extended warranty. Toyota ext warranty is not tied to 1 specific dealer, its any Toyota dealer. and its xfer-able and pro-rated.

Update from dealer : "IF there was any color out there in our Region, then I could produce an Inquiry. That KDSS option is a killer in any color.
It simply is not being made in my Region. I sincerely apologize for the fact that I can't get the truck "exactly" the way you intended but if I can't get it, then no one can."

Also he cannot produce the Vehicle Inquiry Document from when I ordered the 4Runner back in March...Thoughts?

Since you are getting a trail, do you plan on beefing up the suspension yourself? At least with Bilstein 5100s or better after market parts?

If so then don't get KDSS. The better suspension parts will give you the on road handling that KDSS would give you and you won't have another expensive to repair system to break down on you or get in the way of suspension upgrade parts.

If you do NOT plan on upgrading any of the suspension yourself, then it may be worth continuing to look. The KDSS were all over the place here in California 4 months ago. May have to travel to get one.

Sounds like he's yanking your chain - time to ditch that dealer and find one who can get the truck you want. I'm in Queens County, NY and my dealer ordered exactly what I wanted, waited 3 long months for my 2014 trail premium w/KDSS and it was well worth it. I didn't do great on price but I'm so happy with this truck, it was $ well spent. Can't really comment on the lifetime powertrain warranty offer, but I agree with NoDak, don't be fooled by it, it's probably a gimmick and besides, these trucks are build pretty solid.

Was it the Trail Premium w/KDSS you were looking for? I picked one up last month in super white but they seemed a bit scarce here in AZ; but one came available that the dealer never let me know was coming in when I first contacted them. But by chance I sent out another inquiry about 2 weeks later and they responded they just got it in. I thought it was odd.

I'm glad I held out for the TE Premium w/KDSS (wanted a bit of luxury when taking it off-road..i know weird ;) it handles awesome as a DD and when taking it on the trails.

I would start looking out of state and just see what's out there. I was starting to do that and was surprised what other regions were able to get.

if the dealer cant find one, either find a new dealer or go outside your region.

some combo's are region locked. try a different zip code in the config builder at Toyota's website.

but try your zip code first to see if you can build it, if you can, then find another dealer.
