Problem

Hi everybody,

My name is Leon (dutch guy living on Aruba), new to this forum thing and i recently bought a Toyota 4runner 2002, 6cil, 3.4L. (automatic).

Really love the car, but it has a small problem: sometimes when i take left turns the engine just stops and you have to start it up again.
And sometimes when i use the kickdown, it shifts down, gives power, but does not increase much in power.
One of the big issues on Aruba is the quality of the gasoline (pretty crappy) so perhaps there's a problem with one of the filters clogging up????.

I am not very technical, but i do have a lot of friends who are, so if anybody knows what to do, this will probably take away the first fault finding procedures.

you could try changing the fuel filter along with the air filter. also look at changing your spark plugs(denso or NGK dual prong/electrode are the only ones to use) and maybe the wires(again only denso or NGK) good luck and welcome to the forum and enjoy your 4runner/surf!

I had a problem similar but with my Jeep Cherokee...Taking sharp turn left or right it would die at times..Also if I step on the gas it would kick down but wouldn't pick much speed. I could let off of the gas pedal and it would be fine.After months of trouble shooting and swapping parts I replaced the fuel pump (in the tank) and never had a problem since..I found the problem when my buddy finally tells me he has a fuel pressure gauge that I could use to test the fuel pressure. With the gauge hooked up and at idle it had (I think)27psi but on occasion when you opened up the throttle it would drop down to about 5psi...

Nice. I just got back from Bonaire; gorgeous, but immediately I could tell you guys have almost 0 emission laws. If you walked away from the beach, and the ocean air, the whole island had this smell of ****ty exhaust. A combination of cheaply processed fuel and the lack of emission control devices on most cars I would assume.

Hoping this will solve the problem.

Already bought the fuel filter, oil filter, air intake filter, might as well give it a tune up.
The spark plugs and wires have been ordered (still an island)

The problem has been upgraded, now when i drive the power falls away, i let my foot of the gas, it climbs back up....

And i was wondering what the location of the fuel filter is, having trouble locating it.

O and fuel emission laws, i don't even think they now what that means.
Well i am just temporarily here, after 3 years it's back to Holland again.

Fuel filter is on the inside of the frame about in the middle of the truck....

it could also be a plugged cat, sense you dont have emissions then just pull it and sleeve it with some pipe. the fuel filter is located under the drivers door next to the frame rail.
