Starting to get back into off-road 4Runners again. Starting to Restomod this 4Runner. It was an 85 that was very rusty and was the body was cut in half, so utilizing an 88 body. I’ll keep this build up to date as progress happens.

This isn’t going to be a stock restoration, the truck will have 37” tires and will have some second generation 4Runner seats I managed to score at the Junkyard.

Thanks

Looks like you have some good bones to work with!
What engine are you planning and gears to push your 37"s?

Have a 22RE to stick back in it for right now with dual transfer cases. I believe it has 5.29 gears but will not be sure until I get into the axles. I’d like to stick a 5VZFE into it if I can find a wrecked Tacoma or 4Runner to get the electronics out of.

Made some progress, isn’t exactly a 4Runner anymore. So I managed to find a 86 Toyota xtra cab for $400 without a motor. I desired a short wheelbase without a lot of body to damage. So on went the Xtra Cab body onto the 4runner frame. Still have a lot of work to do, but progress is progress.

always like the 2nd gen extra cabs on a short bed frame.

probably had to deal with the gas tank not wanting to clear the right rear part of the body.

You’re exactly right, ran into that when I set the cab on. I’m thinking I’ll either have to weld in the crossmember from the xtra cab frame in at the same position it was and remote the 4runner crossmember or I’ll utilize a fuel cell. Either way that crossmember isn’t going to fit without coming out or using a small body lift.

More progress.

Got the cab mounted. Had to remove the gas tank crossmember to allow the cab to sit properly. Welded in the crossmember in the stock extra cab location. Tacked the cab mounts in place. Plan on having the gas tank in the bed to allow more room underneath, those always get crushed by rocks anyways.
