Protecting a Winch / Aftermarket Bumper from Theft

I just installed an ARB front bumper on my 4Runner and was wondering what exactly was keeping a potential thief from approaching my vehicle in the middle of the night, removing the six hex-bolts holding the bumper onto the bumper frame mounts, and walking away with my $850 bumper. Before getting a winch, I definitely wanted to make sure I had it somewhat protected to deter potential thieves.

Started by going to the local hardware store and getting two replacement bolts, but with an Allen-key type head. I figure a potential thief is less likely to have a complete Allen key set, or at least it would take them a good minute to find the right size. Ideally, I had wanted a Torx-head bolt, but my hardware store didn't have any in stock.

I decided to look at other potential options:

Tack weld onto the actual bolt heads, which would make them impossible to remove without a grinder and some time. I read that this is a bad practice because it can change the composition of the metal in the bolt, somehow, and make it more brittle. Decided not to go with this option.

I've also heard of people taking some steel / iron, forming it into a U shape, and tack welding the edges over the bolt head. This would prevent anyone from removing the bolt unless they first cut off the piece of steel to reveal the bolt head. I don't have access to a welder (plus it would be a little scary laying on my back, having sparks fly everywhere like that) and so I decided against this.

I didn't know if there were any aftermarket products to address this issue. I found one made by Tuffy Security:

Basically, it is a lock box for one bolt. Hopefully the pictures give you a good idea of how it works. I broke down and bought one, paid $35 for the box, and around $11 shipping. Expensive, but well-worth it if it even deters one potential thief from my bumper.

I also heard of a different product, similar to a wheel-lock for a lug-nut. Basically it has a keyed groove on top of it (and it's otherwise a typical bolt, just with a round head and a key in it), and you have to use the special key to unscrew it. It's called the Factor-55 bolt. I managed to find a picture, but everywhere that I tried to buy it from was out-of-stock (I only found it in like two online vendors, so that may be why).

I would buy one of these and stick it on there, just to have double-protection, but I don't know where else I could find it. You can never be too safe with a $800+ investment (which might have another $600+ winch attached to it...

On our 4Runners, the winch would be completely surrounded by the ARB bumper, which would mean the bumper would HAVE to come off to get the winch out, correct? So in essence there's no use in securing the winch with any of these measures if you have the bumper secured with one of these, right?

I know the bumper mounts for the ARB bumper cannot be removed without removing the vertical bolt going through the frame, and the nut on top of this vertical bolt can only be accessed with the bumper off. So this would prevent a thief from removing the bumper mounts where they slide onto the frame, and removing the winch / bumper / mounts as one huge piece..

Have any of you done any security measures like this to protect their rig? And don't mention not-parking in sketchy areas, or keeping it garaged always..because occasionally everyone will park in a parking lot, or somewhere (even if you don't think it's unsafe) that could lead their investment to be stolen, even in the middle of broad daylight.

I've heard of winches being stolen. Bumpers; not so much. Torx bolts came to mind when I read the title, so I would look for those. Park facing a wall of some sort if you can. If a tweaker really wants to steal it, they will. Though they should expect to face the wrath of a T4R enthusiast if they get caught.

Maybe experiment with a glob of heavy duty epoxy resin over the bolt head. Figure out a non destructive way to remove it when you need to?

The box would work, but I wold worry about corrosion. We never had rust issues at all, and for things like lockin hitches etc they were nothing but a pain. Now they are using salt more and more and the problem would be multiplied.

Torx bolt or Tack Welds. For the cost of one box you can have every bolt and nut tack welded at any local shop.

There is not enough heat in even two tack welds to change the metalurgy of a grade 8 bolt or nut.

If you don't want to use an actual weld, which I'm not sure why you wouldn't, it won't do anything to the strength of the bolt to hit it with a quick tack or two. Use JB weld, it basically has to be ground off as well, and would work basically the same way.

I'm planning on using security nuts on the mount of my lightforce lights and putting a little weld at the tip of each bolt, and then welding the bejesus out of the ends of the adjustment bolts so they can never be separated from the bases again. The bumper I'm not too worried about, it would take someone quite a while to pull that thing off and carry it away, I'm never away from my truck that long when it's parked somewhere even remotely sketchy.

ive actually had to use a tow strap to remove my bumper a few times, if you make it difficult enough so they have to use a hammer to get it off you should be good.

a sort of out there solution would be to add some sort of plug that needs to be disconnected to remove the bumper, that plug would set the alarm off when removed.

supposedly on the newer 3rd gens there is a sensor for the hood that will trigger the alarm, if you spliced into that it would work.

I can confirm the hood sensor for the alarm. You could get fancy and rig the alarm to go off when they disconnect the wiring for your lights or winch itself.

stop being so paranoid. No one wants to steal your bumper. It's ugly and bulky. You might as well just let me have it.

My advice.. Put in some Bird spikes, barbed wire, and a couple of hidden fish hooks so the Rottweiler that's tied to your bumper has places to hang it's fresh kill.

Man in all my years of forums and working on them never heard of this happening. I could see the winch going. If I was worried about this I think i would try to find a new place to live. LOL.

But all the ideas above are good. Could just get a motion sensing alarm.

Where did you hear that? Your's is a 2002 so it does not get much newer than that. You probably saw an aftermarket system.

This thread might actually answer a question of mine before I even had to ask it. For a winch to be stolen doesn't the bumper need to come off anyway? The gap at the top isn't wide enough to squeeze a Winch through or is it? If it is then a huge headache of mine will be taken away.

Depends on the bumper, a few are open top with enough room for the winch to be pulled out without taking the bumper off, most of the the winch is in there unless you take the whole bumper off.

Once you put the winch on I assume your going to put the splash plate on? That covers up the access to those six bolts.

To get the winch out of the ARB you would have to remove the bumper. I think your being a bit paranoid. Mine was a son-of-a-gun to get on there, so I can imagine it will be difficult to remove. That thing was heavy with a winch installed.

You can alway park it with the bumper against your house, tree, pole, ect. That way they would have to steal your truck before they could take off the bumper.

There is a switch under the hood on the driver side near the master cylinder on my 01. I assumed it has to do with the alarm, and mine still has the factory one installed. Even my 87 Supra has a similar thing on the factory alarm that sets it off when the hood is opened.
