PS System: Dex III, ATF, or other?

There seems to be a lot of variability about what fluid to use in the PS system. Some have luck with PS fluid, others with synthetic ATF, and others still with Toyota Dex III fluid.

What do you use and what have you had luck with?

I use Amsoil ATF. Been in there for 30K now. Works great.

From the manual:

STEERING
Power steering fluid type:
Automatic transmission fluid DEXRONII
or III

Traditional PS fluid has been known to cause seal leaks on older Toyotas. Stick with Dexron II/III.

I flush with the left over Maxlife ATF after doing a tranny drain and fill.

I thought people were recommending you use the OE Toyota WS fluid for stuff like this. I've heard of MaxLife from Valvoline being a good substitution though.

Not sure why you wouldn't just go with what the owner's manual says. Dexron II/III is cheap, easy to get, and Toyota recommends it. Why look further?

I'm going to use M1 Synthetic ATF.

I put some Dex 6 in there and it seems ok. Not that that's a measure of anything. I agree, just out in what the manual says.
