Pulling the Tranny Question

Do I need to support either end of the engine (V6) when I pull the tranny or will the engine balance on the motor mounts and not tip forward or aft? Please don't guess.

The engine will tilt slightly but not enough to need support. I set up jack stands towards the rear of the tranny for a resting spot when i pull it out and that's it. Also, for the bolt on the top center of the tranny it's easiest to use about 18" of ratchet extensions and reach it from the inside through the shift boot(for a manual at least).

I just pulled my last week to replace my rear main seal. I rented a transmission jack which made reinstall much easier.

Support is not necessary as stated. Used nothing on mine, no issues. Did it by hand and the trans/t-case felt like another engine weight wise. Transmission jack would be helpful for sure.

Use a transmission jack. Getting the transmission, and t-case out is not problem. Getting them back in is a different story. Make sure you line up the tines while the transmission is out. That'll make life a lot easier for you.

Do you mean the splines between the transmission and transfer case?

No, tines. You have 2 tines that the input shaft needs to line up with. They both move independently, and need to line up as close to the old transmissions as you can. If you look at the transmission you'll see them, and can move them with a small screwdriver.

I'm not seeing any tines on my new used tranny. Are the tines between the tranny and the torque converter? My "new" tranny has the torque converter still mounted.
