Purchase or wait....

Hey all,been following the forum for sometime now but now that I am about to make a purchase I'm wanting to get some feedback if ya'll don't mind.

Currently I'm looking at a 2012 sr5 with 32k miles for $29.4k. It's in great condition, comes with sunroof and a few other options. My main question is, with the end of the year starting to approach, do you think some of those used 2014s listed at $32k plus might drop below that $30k mark?

Probably not.

The prices on these things don't budge much.

I'd argue that it's almost better to bite the bullet and pay 4-5k more for a NEW truck.
 
Ya, that's been a thought that has run across my head. Between the vacation I am planning and the pricing of parts I'll need before I leave my budget is pretty fixed at 30k.
 
I agree with [MENTION=92049]LandCruiser[/MENTION]. There's just not that much savings to be had. spend a few grand more and get something brand new with no miles.
 
I was in the same boat last week making that decision. I went ahead and bought a flawless '10 Trail w/ 28k miles that has a toytec lift, xd wheels, rock sliders, new nitto's, a winch, and armor under the truck. I spent 31k but in my mind I justified it because of the upgrades. My budget was 30 but I went ahead and spent the extra to get what I want. If you are debating it, I'm with the other guys. I would spend a little more money and just get one brand new unless you find a deal that you think best suits you that you just cant pass up.
 
I agree with all of the above.

1) raise your budget and get a new one

2) buy an early 5th or a 4th gen for a LOT less, they are still bulletproof..... 4th gen, can be have for $10-20k...... find one that has ALL the features that you need.... and you will be set!

And also realize you're also buying the full factory warranty and a few more years of not having to worry about a car payment or looking for another vehicle since you'll get 2.5 more years with the car (assuming you drive 12k/yr on avg and plan on driving it for 150k-200k miles).


So assign a value to that and realize you're not just paying $4k-$5k extra for the new car smell and zero on the odometer.

I do not see that a new 2015 SR5 could be purchase for 30K even if 2016s will hit the market...Personally, I would find a way to get a new SUV. For the difference of few thousands- nothing can bit the smell of new vehicle and sense of caring for it "right from the birth". If I could not stretch my budget for extra few K's I would consider buying an older vehicle and saving more money then. But that could be only me, lol
 
I agree 100% with what everyone is saying how a new one is more justified. but here is my situation, I am going on a 2.5month trail/camping/fishing trip from sept to thanksgiving. A buddy of mine and I have always talked about it and now that we have been out of school for a while and both have the means of taking the time off we are pulling the trigger on it. I currently drive a xterra that I have put through more than I would trust to get through on this trip. Plus I have always wanted a runner so just another reason to purchase now. We have both set aside a budget for the trip. Which is where this cap at 30k comes into play. Buying a slightly used one for me is my only option as it falls in my budget with out going into the allotted budget for the trip. Between tires, fridge, compressor, etc... I'm already maxing out my accessories budget, so I can't take money from it to add to the truck. What would be a good price to pay for that 2012 and I'll see if I can't haggle them down a little? Again, thanks for all the feedback!

If you buying your rig for cash, I'll understand it. If you financing it-what is the difference of extra 35-50 bucks a month? It's your call

I can appreciate that, but for extra $2k or so, you can buy new.
 
Get a new one. You don't have to worry about any type of abuse or anything. 3GS more would be about $60 give or take more a month. No brainer

One alternative would be to keep the stock tires and get a large cooler instead of the fridge. That would probably give you $1000-$1400 towards a new 4runner. Bonus of keeping the stock tires is better mpgs if you plan to cover a lot of ground. As for the fridge, can you get by with some ice and an igloo cooler instead?
 
So quick update on my situation, was at the dealership working an ad I saw online about a 2014 for 33. Long story short, I saw a 2012 white sr5 I didn't see listed on the website went over looking it over. Turned out to Be a customers who had just finished being checked out for a trade in. Guy walks out ticked off with the trade in value, they offered him 22.5k. He was wanting 27k. Jokingly offered the guy 25k and he said if you are serious it's a deal. Older gentleman probably in his late 60's, turned out he just wanted out of the car to get a smaller one he can drive easier. Said he hated doing trade in cause they always try and stab you with a low ball. Now the fun begins....anyone know of any good build threads which have the blizzard white color? Thanks again for all the input!

Haha sorry [MENTION=51186]philsey[/MENTION], still new here and finding all the hidden gems. After I posted that I found the sticky and been going through it none stop.

Your write up on PD was great probably the first thing I will do as well. I also read your post about retrofit lights. I have never customized headlights before, curious what your take is on the learning curve for a first timer such as my self. Thanks again.
