Question on 2019 and 2020 cruise control.

We are considering switching from our beloved 2011 FJ Cruiser to a new 2019/2020 4R- but I have a concern....

Our FJC has the worst cruise control of any vehicle I've ever owned- and I've been driving since 68 in a huge number of different vehicles. I even installed plenty of the old vacuum operated electromechanical aftermarket cruise controls back in the 70's. They worked better than the FJC cruise control.

The FJC has a hugely annoying habit when topping a hill to overshoot by 4 or 5 mph. This also makes me look like an as***le when climbing a hill and the car next to me is slowly creeping by, when the cruise control punches the throttle and I pull away, only to slow back down when the hill ends.

Does the late model 5th gen 4R also do this?

I'm in a 2018 TRD Offroad and I have not noticed any issues yet. Of course I guess it depends on how big the hill is and how loaded your vehicle is. I'm not around any crazy hills and usually running pretty empty for daily driver. Ultimately though, other than the fact that it is a utility vehicle (not luxury), I say the CC does just fine.

My 2016 4Runner cruise control is exactly like you described in your FJ, on hills it will slow way down then gun it and speed way up.

It's no better in the 2020 4Runner TRD Pro. It was the same in my 2016 Highlander that I traded in. I've also noticed when going up hills frequent shifting back and forth like it can't decide what gear it needs to be in. That combined with the 2020 Pro exhaust drone makes long trips on the highway not the best.

I think this is very dependent upon vehicle/speed/terrain. I've compared a 2014 JGC to a 2014 4Runner running side by side at 70 mph with cruise on (family caravan). When both vehicles hit a hill, the 4Runner did much better at maintaining the preset speed.

One thing that might help is shifting the transmission to S5 from D so the transmission/engine aren't hunting for the power band.

Maybe a shorter hill or taller hill, vehicle load (weight in the cargo area etc.) would change the answer.

We did buy a new 2019 TRDORP. The cruise control is much better than the FJC- maybe a little overshoot but much less.
Very pleased with it so far. 2 weeks in and about 200 miles.

I agree. I get 2-3mph overshoot if that. Enough that I watch it, but not enough to be ridiculous.

I haven't noticed any issues with my 2019 after 3500 miles. We'll be taking our daughter back to school in January so we'll get a good 800 mile test through the Appalachians and see how it does.

My 2019 4R TRD PRO did the same but I have noticed a bit of a change since adding the Pedal Commander.. Could be placebo effect or since its applying the pedal communication faster maybe it is working.. But for sure it isn't going into 3 as much..

I have no problems with my 2019 TRDOR. Haven't noticed what you're referring to, and have made 4 trips from Ohio to CT across Pennsylvania over the past year. A decent cruise control workout, I think, with plenty of short and long hills and flats.

Mine definitely does that, but its defintely not anything that bothers me or would keep me from purchasing a vehicle

Wait...... the 2020 has adaptive cruise control, so its the one to get hands down. Best invention since airbags.

My 4Runner does the same thing and I have a 2019 Limited. I tried it and had to turn it off on a trip I recently did and just drive with my foot. Even the slightly incline the 4Runner would downshift and accelerate past the set speed and then wait till we are at the top to go back to overdrive. My foot doesn't cause this and it keeps it at the speeds fine. Not impressed with it's cruise control at all because of that.

My ‘18 SR5 cruise works fine. Interstate 80 and other nearby highways climb with some steep grades. The only irritating thing that bothers me climbing grades with the cruise on is that the transmission is reluctant to upshift after topping summits, often staying in the lower gear starting down the other side for a tenth of a mile or so. The cruise control activation system seem to me straight out of my former ‘02 Tacoma.

My '90, '00, '08 and '19 were/are the same way. I chalk it up to a system that doesn't have the best feedback/response time coupled with an engine that's not loaded with torque. I have a Mustang GT that will sit in 5th gear with cruise control on and it will climb a wall without needing to downshift.
