Question regarding the trim surrounding wheel wells

Can anyone should some light on this?

I see 2wd and 4wd with Trim.
Sometimes a 4x4 has a thin lip that is chrome. and sometimes that is black. The black looks like an ABS version of the Limited's painted version. I also see SR5's with painted body color moldings but I believe that was a 99+ update?

I think that the 1996-1998 had chrome for 2wd SR5, Black thick for 4WD SR5, and painted silver (i think just silver) for Limited. The 1999-2002 I think all SR5 and limited came with body painted molding regardless of 2WD/4WD?

Do I have this right? Cause it seems that 4runners are all over the place on these trims...

I ask because in Charlotte...there is a 2001 SR5 4x4 with nothing...

I'm not 100% sure on when each flare option was offered other than
1. All limited models have the wide painted flares
2. The skinny black flares weren't offered after '99.
3. None of the options were dependent on 2wd vs 4wd.

The rest is my speculation, but it seems to me that if you don't have the 16" wheel upgrade, then you don't have any fender flares. If you have an SR5 that was also upgraded to 16" wheels, then you got the small chrome flares or you could get a further upgrade to the skinny black flares (96-99) or wide painted flares (2000-02).

If the price falls within your budget. I'd deduct the cost of a waterpump timing belt replacement if i was to make an offer. But thats just me.


There are different package levels within the base, SR5, Limited and Sport trim categories. For instance an 00' Limited like mine had three different packages available all of which can also be combined by the dealer too.

This site does a pretty good job at describing the variations.
