Quick ? On tires

2018 4Runner no lift, TRD Pro wheels (being shipped). Will eventually do BMC and lift but need tires now since we had a sidewalk tear.

Size I’ll buy is 265/70/17 due to possible difficulties of 270-285 without lift. . We do some off reading and hit OHV/ORV occasionally. Some forest and mountain roads but nothing crazy. Our stock tires got the damage mild off roading in TX.


I am debating on KO2 or the Faulken but my concern is the fact they are AT tires. We do roughly 75% highway driving and the rest mild off roading. Will the AT tires be okay for that much highway driving especially in rain? Also will they be fine in the Houston heat? Figured we have to make the step to AT for the strength and grip since we are becoming more adventurous.

This is my first set of AT’s as before all I drove were sports cars. Sooooo if this becomes a “read more...” kinda thread I’m still doing as such but most of the topics have been “what brand” or “what size” both which I already know ^.^

I run the "stock size" falken wildpeaks on TRD rims. They were put on last winter when my suspension was stock. Since then I added the Eibach pro truck kit.

The wildpeaks have been GREAT on the road, and off road in Moab. Also, they handled this summers heat in Phoenix with no issues.

You'll be fine with ATs on the highway. Heat and rain handling come down to the compound of the specific tire.

I have the Ko2 on my 4runner and have no complaints. They replaced a set of Toyo at2s that got damaged. I also have the C load cooper at3 on my Silverado and have 60k on them. They don’t look as good as the Ko2 but their on road traction is better. I’ll probably buy them for the 4 runner next time.

AT's are just fine on the highway but will be a little louder. You must rotate them every 5k and I would definitely get an alignment after you put them on. Michelin will probably be your quietest AT tire. 60k warranty on LTX A/T 2's.

I put BF Goodrich All Terrain tires in stock size on my 4Runner and notice no difference in ride, handling or noise. They are MUCH better in rain and snow than the OEM tires. The All Terrain comes in two different load ranges and I got the higher load range (adds a couple more plys) for I do some serious off roading. BF Goodrich is also made by Michelin, probably the most respected tire company in the world. BF Goodrich also makes a Mud Terrain tire but that is probably too aggressive for your driving, and it would wear faster and be noisy. The side walls on the All Train make the 4Runner look awesome.

I ran the KO2 in stock size load C with Pro wheels when I had my not lifted 2016. I lived out by Reno and they were fine in the snow and I did not consider them loud. I thought they rode great overall. I have since ran SL load Duratracs in stock size on my Tacoma and now my new 4Runner. I think they are a touch louder, but their wet and snow performance are better out here in the mountains of VA. I debated trying the Falkens this time, but stuck with the Duratracs because they were great on the Tacoma and Goodyear had a $225 rebate this time.

I think you will be fine either way you go between the KO2s or the Falkens. AT tires are just fine for the highway and I doubt you will notice much of a difference outside of maybe a little noise increase and maybe a slight decrease in MPG. If you get LT tires then they will be heavier and will change the ride a little more. I prefer SL load tires just because I am 90 percent on road and 10 percent off road, but the C load KO2s were impressive

I'd say if OP is very concerned about wet handling, go with the Falkens versus the KO2. I thought the general consensus is that the lack of a continuous path on KO2s make them inherently higher risk to issues like hydroplaning, plus it seems like folks generally complain about them breaking away more in the wet (especially once worn).

I've run the Falkens, but not KO2s. As long as you can get the Falkens balanced, they're a great tire for the money (especially in SL).

Almost a year on stock size wildpeaks and to be honest about 20% louder BUT they have been fantastic especially on rain soaked roads mild off-road time but tires were perfect and they really look awesome :hippie:

I live in Houston as well, and put a set of Nitto Terra Grappler G2's on when the Michelins I had before suffered a catastrophic sidewall blowout for no apparent reason. My tires are load range E, which is probably overkill, but I have been really happy with them. Very quiet, good traction in the rain, no issues at all on any of the Houston area streets, or at a friends ranch near Victoria, where there are some small, but steep, places I drive across. I actually bought these tires at Discount Tire in Victoria, since the blowout happened on a road near there. Same size as the stock tires.

New 2020 ORP, replaced stock wheel and tires with TRD Pro wheels and Falken Wildpeak AT3W’s is stock 265/70/17. Went with SL rating for comfort and weight.

Tire shop said they balanced great.

Love these tires. Perhaps slightly louder than stock on the highway but negligible. Handle great. Went camping this weekend which required some rock crawling on neglected forest service roads in northern Arizona. Performed like a champ.

I get no rubbing even at full lock. Other have mentioned they get slight rubbing in reverse full lock, but I have not experienced that.

Coming to the 4Runner camp from a Wrangler. The 4Runner continues to impress beyond expectations!

The Wildpeaks have been great in rain and snow. Closing on 40K miles they've definitely gotten louder at speed on the highway but overall holding up well, still had 50% thread as of the last rotation. I plan on buying a second set of these when time comes - SL in stock size.

I agree with others - My 265/70/17 KO2's were a good tire and lasted 80K miles but their performance in the rain wasn't that great. After a lift and SCS 8.5 Ray 10's I put on 285/70 Cooper AT3 XLTs With an E raiting. After 1000 miles couldn't be happier. I went back and forth between the Wildpeaks and the Coopers for a few weeks and it finally came down to the Coopers being 5lbs lighter than the Wildpeaks which helps with fuel economy.
