Quick question on engine roar

I have a 2002 Runner. It seems like the engine roars pretty loudly especially in the first two gears (it is automatic).
It almost sounds like I have a cold air intake installed, which I do not.

Is this common for these 4Runners?

Check to see if the lid on the air box is closed all the way, if that is open it will sound like there is a CAI installed.

You may also want to check your fan clutch. After letting the engine get hot, grab the fan and move it side to side and up and down. If you feel slack it needs replaced.

Does it do it ALL the time? Or only when the engine is cold, like when you first start driving or shortly thereafter?

I got my '02 runner earlier this year and it seemed to have quite a bit of engine roar. I thought maybe it was just how it is cause I was used to my '97.

I just replaced my fan clutch today and OH MAN the difference is amazing. More power, less noise, and after I burn through this tank of gas we'll see how much better the MPG is.

My experience has been that I get a loud roar when I first start my truck up in the morning, or when it's been off for several hours. After a minute or two it goes away. Also, I won't hear a roar if I start my engine after it's already been warmed up. I think it's pretty cool though. Sounds tough. Rawr!!

Mine does this too. Does this mean my fan clutch needs to be replaced?

No. It means you're 4R is running normally.

I had a defective fan clutch that had seized up. Since it would not disengage properly and spinning the fan at full speed all the time, it was stealing power and mpg from my engine. Damn noisy too.

He said the fan ran at full speed all the time. That's when you know the clutch isn't working properly. Either that, or it never comes on. It's very obvious when it's on and when it's not (because it is quite loud).

Yeah, I just replaced my fan clutch this weekend and what a night and day difference. The airport under my hood is now miraculously GONE!!! LOL

Let's see how the next full tank of gas does, because I was getting anywhere from 12.5 - 14.5 MPG city...
