Rad from manual 4Runner to automatic?

Hello, bought a couple 93 4runners to try to make one good wheeling rig. I want to take the rad out of one with a manual transmission and put it in and automatic. Both 1993 and both the 3.0 motor. Anybody foresee any issues? Never worked on these before. Wondering if the automatic requires a loop for transmision cooling that the manual may not have?

Pretty sure it does. Look at the bottom of the rads, does the one from the automatic truck have a couple hoses between it and the transmission?

You could always add an external transmission cooler. Lots of 3rd gen guys do exactly that.

Unfortunaty there is no rad currently in the one with the automatic. Hard for me to cross reference. Anybody else been down this road? Thanks for the thought of the external tranny cooler , I'll keep that in mind.

Look at the bottom of the radiator in your manual rig. If you have lines going in, one on each side, you're good. Otherwise, you're looking for a new one. You have to have a cooler for the A340 transmission.

There may be a chance the radiator in the manual has the integrated cooler if it's not the original (seen people use auto radiators as replacements in manuals when the former wasn't available.). If not, you can still use the radiator but will need to go with a separate trans cooler. Depends on what you want to do, price of the each, etc.

Also, you may want to verify what hoses you will need. The plumbing may be slightly different between the two. ....I don't know.

many aftermarket rads are auto capable. they just make them all the same, saves on production costs.

Thanks for the replies all. I've checked the radiator on the manual transmission 4Runner and there are no hoses running into the bottom. I'm on a pretty tight budget on these rigs so may try to find one at a salvage yard off of an automatic. Of the little reading I did about an aftermarket trans cooler it would seem that it is not easy to mount an aftermarket cooler in front of or behind the rad. I don't want to mount one down behind the valence as others have done. "Low hanging fruit" will not be desirable on this bush rig.

New idea. Use the radiator and the manual transmission from the donor. This way you get a five speed and don't have to worry about a trans cooler.

That A340H seriously sucks balls. The R150 is a much better unit.

Agreed. I loved my manual, until the rest of the truck started falling apart at 300k miles.

My brother's auto 4Runner is wonky. To be honest, I'm not a fan of the 3rd gen's transmission either, still has a mind of its own on when to shift. Reliable but mechanically inferior to other cars I've had.
