Audi's new SUV will have "Side Assist". It will use radar to sense approaching vehicles in your blind spot and alert you with LEDs.

My guess is that it'll probably use a different frequency than police radar (those are set frequencies). The way a radar detector functions is that it actually emits a very weak radar signal that is of the same frequency that it's trying to detect. When it receives a signal, it compares it to what it knows to be a police radar frequency (the one it produces) and if they match, sounds an alarm. That's why some crappy detectors will set off other detectors--they give off too much of a signal and other detectors pick it up. Some motion detectors for burglar systems also were in the same frequency and would set off detectors. At least that's how it used to work.

Yep, I'm sure it will use the same technology as Lexus and Toyota's Avalon (and other luxury makes) that have laser-guided cruise control to detect cars in front of you, slowing your car down appropriately.

How so? Perhaps my terming of "laser-guided cruise control" was the incorrect term, but the technology is the same. The supposed oranges sure do taste like apples to me.

Adaptive Cruise Control:
The radar sensor for the system is discreetly mounted in the area of the licence plate trim (on Audi). During the journey it transmits waves at a frequency of 76.5 gigahertz
