Rain-x washer fluid?

I tried the Rain-X additive. No streaking, the rain drops beading up just as advertised. However It did leave a film on the windshield which did turn into almost completely opaque when the sun is low and shines through from certain angle. It looked like a layer of crystalized salt. When this happens I need to sit up or down a few inches to change my viewing angle so that I can see again.

For this reason I stopped using it after it ran out. It took a long time for the residuals to go away.

Junk. The stock windshield is hydrophobic which competes with Rain X. I have had nothing but horrible experiences with their entire product line from washer fluid to wipers.

My Gen 3, year 2000 4Runner's windshield was definitely hydrophobic and the water beaded up very well. My Gen 4, 2005 did not bead at all. I now use RainX additive in the blue washer fluid and it works like a charm. Very happy with the RainX.

My gen 4 (1st) windshield was super hydrophobic. When I had it changed I mentioned it to the shop doing the replacement and they looked at me like I was crazy. This was an advertised feature in the brochure when I bought the 4R.

The key to using the wipe on rainX is start with a super clean windshield, then use it sparingly, twice.

It lasts a long time, works well, and is worth the effort.
