Here's why you need an app.... or a notebook or something.
I just want to echo what you said. I had back surgery (L5S1 discectomy after 12 years in the Army) in Feb, 2014. Prior to that I used to do triathlons (poorly) and put about 1,000 miles on my running shoes annually (but never kept track).
I expected some issues getting back into shape, but it really changed my entire body mechanics and I started getting pretty depressed because my times didn't recover (still haven't).
But after keeping track for a few weeks I was able to see that, while my times haven't returned, I'm accumulating more miles/wk than I did before, just at a slower pace. That was pretty motivating to me, but YMMV.
