Rattle Canned my stock wheels today

Hey guys, just bought my runner a week ago. Been so crazy with work 65+ hours a week but i finally had time to take care of the pitted and ugly stockers it came with. Yea, i could have bought another set and went aftermarket but i personally like the stock Toyota look better. Plus, the i like the challenge of maintaining rather than buying new!

I think they came out pretty good, what do you guys think? If you have any ideas on what i can do next to give it a more "tough" look for cheap $$ i would appreciate any! Btw: These were painted with Dupli-Colors line of wheel paint, just the paint, No clear coat. Prepped with a dremel with sanding attachment.

I just love this 4runner and i want to express it! Sooooooooo much better than that AWFUL corolla i was driving.( But <<<--- was still reliable!)

I'm like you, I like the stock wheels better than any after market I've seen. I just bought my 98 SR5 and it came with some ugly saw blad design wheels. Needless to say, I'm looking for some stock 4runner wheels to replace them.

Again, good job on the wheels.

Heres a crappy diagram of how i covered the tire, i took the tires off the truck to do this BTW...haha. If you were planning on painting with them on, i wouldnt !

I removed the center cap also and painted it separate. I cut a nice circle out of painters tape to fit perfectly over the toyota logo and then sanded the cap and painted.

For those who dont understand that drawing, here goes.

1. Buy nice wide painters tape, the green kind is what i used. Autobody stuff.

2. Cut out about 20-25 pieces at 3" long for each wheel.

3. Then one by one slide each piece under the gap between the tire and wheel, overlapping as you go. Dont press down and seal them to the tire yet, just use your finger to seal around the edge closest to the rim, and leave the rest sticking up.

4. Once your all the way around, find some cardboard.

5. Now lay it over your wheel and punch a hole in the center, then use a blade to work your way out to the outside of the rim. Then just follow the rim around with the blade to cut a nice circle out the size of the rim. Make sure you used a big enough piece of cardboard to cover the WHOLE tire.

6. Now, take the piece of cardboard you just cut and cut in directly in half.

7.Take one half, slide it underneath the tape you left sticking up. Now you can seal the tape onto the cardboard! Repeat for other piece.

8. Dont forget the valve stem !

Few other things i should mention, i used 80 grit on a dremel to rough up the real nasty pitting, then went around with 400 grit and sanded the whole wheel again. That seemed to work best. The Duplicolor brand spray seemed to be a little "Runny" at times but dried great. Three light coats worked best for me. I only needed two cans.

I had absolutely no overspray on the tires with this method. Enjoy guys!

Holy crap that looks great! My 99 came with the terrible sawblades, so I found a set just like yours for $100 but they are in the same bad condition so I haven't put them on yet.

What color paint did you use?

I can't seem to find the Dupli-color everybody talks about.

rims look sweet. I will be doing that once the snow stops. I also have a set of LC wheels to play with. winter tire summer fun tires and maybe even differetn colors. lol

I painted mine as well but let me recommend laying the cards on their side rather than standing them upright. I had no over spray and it also allowed me to get at better angles with the cards lower. I painted wheel weights and all because its so easy to do over and most tire places are going to fawk up the paint when they touch them anyway...its just what happens with rattle canned wheels.

X2! I did mine flat black (grill paint) with the cards after completely stripping the old finish off. The cards a great since every few weeks I'm doing touch ups after beating them up on the trails.
