Can't wait to hear about the new gears.

I have always been curious how much a difference it will make on responsiveness now that you have the bigger tires and stiffer suspension.

Can you take a 0-40 mph youtube video of before and after ... or just use a stopwatch and tell us the times ... I would like to know the differences.

You may know this, but after I installed my 4.88's in my Tacoma, I followed Precisions "break in instructions." If you don't change your diff fluid as recommended, there's a good chance you'll have all of those shavings in the diff (hopefully on the magnet) floating around. If you want the gears to last, break them in as stated below.


Gear Break-In Procedure

1. Insure that the axle has been filled to the correct level with
proper hypoid lubricant before driving the vehicle.
The oil rating must be GL5 or higher.

2. Bring the axle to normal operating temperature by driving the
vehicle (unloaded) for approximately 15 to 20 miles. Do not
run full throttle accelerations or create any shock loads. Worked very well.

3. Let the axle assembly cool completely.

4. For the next 200 miles of operation, drive gently, without any
heavy loads.

5. If trailer towing is intended, an additional cycle of 200 to 300
miles of break-in is required without the trailer. This is important!
To properly break-in a new gear set, a minimum of 500 miles of
driving is essential before towing.

I'm not doing the install, I'm taking it to an axel and gear shop so I won't have to worry about fluids, but I will follow the procedures above.
 
I live down the street from you. Let me know when you get the gearing done, where you did it, and how much it cost if you can. I may like to use them if they are reasonable. You can PM me if you want.

BTW- Your rig is quickly becoming my favorite 3rd gen. So jealous.

you have a great lookin rig man. and you did it in such little time! i had my ride for 6 months before i got my lift and rims/tires.

Thanks man! Yeah i put alot of hours in at work and used most all my graduation money for lift and tires
 
subscribed. this thing is bad! thought about those wheels for a little bit but thought they looked weird in 16'', but on your runner they look badass!

I just bought a 97 sr5 but my 15 y.o. Brother will be taking it, and I'll get him hooked on this website as well.

Hmmm, you talked about the frame being bent and not being able to open the back hatch? It sound like some extensive frame damage. Are you sure it is going to be safe for your kid brother to be driving? I wouldn't want my kid driving around in a vehicle that had that kind of damage. Sad to see it go, but maybe for the better...
 
Well the body shop keep jerking around with us on different things. After review thought the frame is not tweeked. it is.missing the wheel with is making it sorta flex witch is why we I thought it was tweaked. But they totaled it due to the air bags. We are going to put but we are going to buy them from a pick and pull.

And I think you read it wrong, my brother just got a new one not the old one. I'll ve keeping the onld one.
