Real world "city" fuel mileage for V8?

Hello all, first time posting here.

I bought new (to me) 05 4runner V8 2wd recently and loving everything about it!

I just have one question.

What do you guys getting for "city" fuel mileage?
I hardly drive on highway so fuel economy ain't that good, but I can only get between 12~13mpg.

Car is still fairly new with only 10K miles on it.

i can get 14-17 in the city with the AC on. i baby the throttle and barely let the revs over 2k. i have the 4x4 tho..

I get 16-17.5 80%city/20%rural mixed driving.

18-21 Hwy.

I run oversized tires Bridgestone Revo AT's 265/70/17.

We also switch between summer blended and winter blended fuels here in WI. Above #'s are for summer , in winter I can subtract 1-2 mpg.

I drive 17 miles each way to work. It's about 1/3 winding back roads, 1/3 highway, 1/3 stoplights.

I'm easy on the throttle most of the time, A/C some of the time, tires @ 36 psi.

I get a little over 20 mpg hand calculated, computer claims about 22

I get about 15-16 MPG on stop-and-go suburban streets with a very short commute. I have a lead foot, and the A/C is always on. Mileage is worse in the winter than in the summer for the usual reasons (cold air, more idling to warm up); right now, I'm on the high end of that range.

To the OP, check/change your engine air filter and ensure that all of the routine maintenance is current. That's very low mileage for an 05, so make sure things were done based on time intervals and not just mileage.

Compute your mileage using the trip odometer and how much gas the pump says it put in. Don't trust the trip computer - it's wrong, although it's usually too optimistic - better MPG than reality.

I must also note I run my tires at 40 psi.

I'm not a conservative driver .

I calculate by hand , but my comp. usually is almost right on with hand calculations.

My V8 4x4 4Runner gets 15-16+ mpg around town and 19-20+ mpg on the highway.
Those are hand calculated figures since the on-board display in my 4Runner runs about 12-14% higher than the actual mpg.
They are also summer blend gas figures. Winter blend gas yields 1-2 mpg less.

me too. But there are days i think i get 14 or less in the city especially when i'm in a hurry or just to smoke someone.

i get about 16mpg city unless i am sitting in infinite traffic. Freeways i avg 21-22mpg. Last weekend i took a trip to Vegas pure freeway cruising, it returned me 22.6mpg cruising at a steady 75mph all the way there. Im going off calculating gallons in at the next fill up divided by miles driven. The on board puter claims 23.8 which is off a bit.

Well, I pump the gas today, and I got 12.8miles/gallon.
This is calculated using trip meter and amount of gas went into the tank.
Computer display says I got 14.7mpg.

I do use A/C all the time, but I drive very easy and don't hawl heavy stuff. Being in middle of the pacific, A/C is almost always on. hehehe...

I'll try and check tire pressure, and also check/change air filter if needs to be. Previous owner is a friend of mine, and I know he was changing oil every 3months, but not sure what else he was doing.

Seems like everyone is getting better mileage than me, even with 4wd....maybe something is wrong with my car.

Clean the MAF. The other thing I find with my V6 in Florida is if the outside temp exceeds about 86-87 my mileage drops significantly compared with 83-84. All I can attribute it to is the extra, substantial engagement of the power robbing fan clutch.

If I am willing to sweat my MPG goes way up if I shut the A/C off when it's above 87F. What this does is drop the fan clutch temp enough to disengage it. Plus there's a slight reduction in accessory drag with the A/C off.

Unfortuantely the amount of fan energy required to keep it working properly when it's hot & humid is enough to really affect mpg.

Bottom line is clean the MAF sensor, check your tire pressure and that's about all you can do.
