Rear axle housing

So guess I posted a while back that I lost my rear end. Rear housing is shot. Mechanic suggested I get a new diff and driveshaft at the time to try and salvage as much as possible.

3 weeks later I am in the same boat. I have the diff and driveshaft but my housing is dead. I am looking for a housing or a complete assemble, 2001 4.10 gears, no locker, 4wd. Ive been looking at car-parts but some people I've emailed have gotten zero response.

Is there a Toyota part number? Does Toyota sell the housing separate? Alot of junk yards I've called says they keep the diff and housing together usually average of 700 or more price tag.

Bone yards overcharge....at least before you show up to negotiate. Bring cash. It's a dickering environment.

Also, the junk yard doesn't want to part the housing. Too much in labor tearing it down....better to buy complete if you can.

Another option is Craigslist. Same thing....people will try to gouge, but that axle is probably only really worth $300 complete around here at most.....a rear toy housing set up for leaves is only worth $150 max around here, but the 4Runners are more b/c of the brackets and they are more rare.



Looks like you can buy a new housing.....possibly. Around $800 from here: Toyota Online Parts | toyotaonlineparts.com | Toyota Parts Online Freight would probably kill you.


You'll have to put in your VIN to get the right one. Personally, I'd find someone parting a 4Runner out.

Not difficult at all. Basic hand tools....though you may need to replace seals/bearings depending on condition. Bearing replacement would make it more difficult.
 
I have a ABS 4.10 diff/housing for sale, FL is a bit of a drive though if you're in NY. Only asking $100 axle is open and out of my 4Runner when I traded it out for a E-Locker.
 
Looking at local to me Brewster salvage yard. People there have been extremely helpful. They have a 4.30 with 15inch wheels. Called toyota a while back about my ratio gave them my vin guy told me 4.10. I have an 01. The yard also has an 01. Strange both trucks have different ratios from the same year.
I think I would need to swap the axles if there from 15in wheel set up correct?

I wouldn't have told you that they don't need to be swapped if they were different.

A Tacoma rides on leaf springs in the rear. The housings are not the same as they have leaf spring pads and no control arm bracketry.

Just so you know why there are different ratios in the same year model is because of the options. E locker option usually came in a different gear ratio and if it's auto/manual, 4 Cyc/V6, 2wd/4wd. Though I don't think you can get some of those options in an 01. I'd check Craigslist often if you can wait. I've been some housings locally every once in a while for a couple hundred bucks.

Iirc, you need to make sure the housing is abs if your have abs. Some housing are non abs.
 
Update!

Hi guys wanted to update my original post. I was able to find a housing from a member on here which was awesome.

I rushed to bring the housing over the mechanics early Monday morning. Called in today to get an update and they are saying 3 days to finish. This sounds crazy to me.

What should a shop charge to swap rear axle housing, keep in mind i have a new diff, so only thing he would be swapping over to the new housing is the axles. I already approved new axle seals so what are we talking about here $600 at max? Truck is on a lift, even without air tools it should not be to hard to remove and replace or so i thought. Any insight appreciated

Time wise the WHOLE job should take a day tops. That includes the seals. Are you doing just the seals. How many miles on the bearings?
$600 might be around the right price if only doing the seals. I would do the bearings and inner retainer while disassembled. This would raise the cost a bit. There would be other things I would do also, like frame coat the area, rear brakes check/ replace, clean adjust bell cranks and make sure they work, replace the dif breather. Probably a few other things I can't think of right now.

OP, I was in the same boat as you over the summer. Picked up another spare loaded axle and went to town on it but in my back yard. I only reused my 3rd member aka rear diff. Rest was freshened up.

IF you need Oem wheel bearings, I have a new pair of unused set with outer rubber boot. I'm close to JFK area so somewhat close...

In red highlighted above, is exactly what I did. In addition I also replaced brake wheel cylinders and new ebrake cable as my ebrake cable was busted as most. Super coated entire axle housing even slapped in new brake springs.

I also replaced springs and shocks with new ones and new sway bar end links. Look at your rear control arms as well. It's all coming out for the swap so good opportunity to replace them if you have the coin. The axle seals may take some time pending if outsourced to machine shop. Those inboard retainer ring has to be positioned well and using Oem axle seals is the way to go. Fair warning for future leaks if not done right.... There are threads on here about axle seals. Have a look.

Mechanic is almost there with getting my truck back together. He told me today the abs sensors are so bad he can't remove them without destroying them. Is this something to get used or new? I searched some online but many different prices and parts. Rear abs sensor that plugs into the housing is what I am looking for. Cheapest option at this point so I can get the truck up and running. Currently riding my yamaha r6, last few mornings have gotten chiller.

You have to work them out. You might damage the outside plastic but they do come out. A pair of quality slip joint locking pliers and just keep turning and twisting and pulling up at the same time. Spray some WD or the like on the base while turning. They WILL come out. Those things are kinda expensive to replace.

If you do get some get used. Maybe [MENTION=78895]DeathCougar[/MENTION] has some

Trying to find replacement seems difficult can't seem to find cheap rear sensors.
