Rear axle upper arms

I just got back from a long trip to Seattle towing a car with the 4runner. On the way back (without the car) I noticed when I accelerated it felt like the rear axle was twisting out from under the car.

Today upon inspection both of the rear axle upper control arms are snapped. This would explain why under acceleration it feels like the axle is slipping back, because it is. I'm surprised they are snapped and am curious what caused it.

Did I snap them when I braked hard a few times while towing the car? Or is it because I installed a two inch lift in the rear a few months ago and they should be longer?

Any insight would be great.

EDIT: They might be called rear links? They are the arms that go on the top of the axle, between the springs. A point in the direction of new ones would be great, if there is an aftermarket that is better or whatnot.
