Rear cone bumpstops?

The rear suspension has a block-style bump stop on each side, right? So, why do the cone bumpstops exist? Can I just remove them and be fine?

I am looking into removing them, to lower the rear of my 4Runner as much as possible.

I'm not going to say yay or nay, I did run without them for 6 years...recently put them back in after modifying them to work with the air bags. Probably would have helped to have them on those overloaded/bad shock runs but otherwise no worries for me.

I am also running without them. Although if I did it over again I would just trim most of the cone, but leave them installed so the metal spring isn't hitting the metal spring bucket. Mine squeaks sometimes.
 
Maybe my question wasn't very clear :) It's like seeing a guy wearing suspenders AND a belt. If the suspenders are doing the job, why wear the belt?

I do understand the metal on metal argument, but then why aren't they just rubber spacers?
 
Don't the cones contact way before the other bumpstops and act as a progressive helper spring. I think you want those in there unless you are lowering a lot and adding significant spring rate or air bags.

you're talking the ones that are inside the coils, yes?

I think they are there, and meant to be used as part of the suspension. on the biggest hits, or the heaviest loads, it should ease the contact against the hard block some. but that lets them use a rather soft coil, so we still get a comfortable ride.
