Rear Diff Fluid Chang Question

Indeed, $100 is way too low. I was quoted 260 CAD a couple of weeks ago, which is close to 200 USD (they said about $260, whatever that means). The quote was obtained at the dealership over the phone and the person on the other end could not explain what exactly is included in the price.

Yeah, my local Toyota dealer charges $299 for a fluid exchange, so the $100 service must have been d/f only.

[MENTION=147280]williamteichroeb[/MENTION] , you say you had the dealer do the transmission fluid change and they only charged you $100, it sounds like they only did a "drain and fill" which only replaces 2 to 3 quarts, I assume this because of the cost of the fluid itself, just 1 quart of the WS fluid cost anywhere from $8 to $12 depending on where and how many you buy, so to do a complete fluid exchange using 12 quarts the cost of the fluid alone would be at a minimum of $96 to well over $100 and then you still have the labor cost, do you know exactly how much fluid they changed out?

Now I'm wondering exactly what they did, also how much I paid. I confirmed it was a flush for sure, and the girl said it would be.....I'll look into it and find my receipt (I keep them all) and get back to you

Thank you to all of y’all who helped me out with this. Just finished the first ever differential fluid change on the ‘05 V8 191k 4Runner. Super easy job.

I heavily recommend getting a Fluid Lubricant Pump to fill the differential with after the drain. I went with Mobil 1 75w-90 Full Synthetic LS fluid. Works like a charm! Got the two gaskets for the drain and fill plug from Toyota for $1.50 each.

For its first ever fluid change I was quite surprised with the color of it. Dark, yes. But not as horrible as I expected. Thought it would come out completely black.

Well done! None of this stuff is really all that complicated if you have tools, unless the bolts refuse to cooperate or break. Try to do something else next time

Tranny Drain and Fill

I opted for just a pan drain and fill today. Drained just shy of 3 quarts (including the sample for Blackstone), and refilled with three quarts of Toyota WS (less what I couldn't pump out of the quart bottles). Pain that the Toyota bottle doesn't fit a standard fluid pump...

[MENTION=96696]Samm25[/MENTION], congrats on your truck and doing some tasks yourself. I was in the same boat a couple of years ago and it feels great to do the work and even better to have the cash you would have paid someone else.

I was also torn about the tranny flush. I ended up paying the local dealer $179 for a full flush. Scotty Kilmer’s take is well worth your time and sums up why I decided to get mine done.

Going to be tackling the Diffs in a couple days. I'm thinking of doing the trans in July might just go to the dealer.

Take care in tightening drain plug

If you do the trans flush, be very careful not to overtighten the drain plug. There are several threads here of stripped plugs. I learned the hard way. I think the spec is 15 ft-lb.

For critical parts like the diff pan, I never use a torque wrench. More often than not people over tighten and strip or break something. Tight is right, that is my motto.
