Rear Diff Lock option?

this might be a stupid question but my 00 has the locking diff., does it lock the front too? Its a dumb question I know but I saw a dude on yotatech with a 2nd gen and his front and rear was locked. I figure his is aftermarket or diy but i thought I'd ask.

In stock form, it will only work when in 4LO not 4hi. there is a mod called "the grey wire" mod, which the locker will work in any gear, 4lo, 4hi, or 2wheel drive...
They guy on YT probley has ARBs on the front and rear.

I actually just did the grey wire mod (actually blue wire for runners) the other night and I took pics and did a write up for it, it think its on the second page of all the threads. There doesnt seem to be any actual 4runner write ups for it so I decided to do one. P.S. ric whats the word on this sunday? I took my running boards of and got my runner ready for the trails. I havent been wheelin in like 8 months I cant wait any longer.ric said:

I dont really care where we go as long as its not so tough that I cant get my unarmored for the most part stock rig up it, and its not somewhere I've been before (slaughter house, chinaman's gulch, red cone). See if sn0wrunner wants to take us up where he went back in October, where his t4r of the month pics were taken. That place looked pretty sweet, and my dad told me about a cool trail that follows an old train track up to a mine in that same area off guenella pass. I also know of some really cool places up around winter park that take you way up above timberline, actually, nevermind on that one, winter park got like a foot of snow last week.ric said:

Hey, I'm dying to get my new set-up on the trails, but I figured the forest access roads would be chained off this time of year. If the weather in the mtns this week has been anything like down in Denver, I doubt there's much snow left at all!! Although I think the weather is going to be changing soon.
If you guys can find a trail that's open right now, lets get a group together, I'm sure Snowrunner wants to test his trail range with his new CB! I bet a group of sick 4runners with a snowy mtn backdrop would be a sick photo!

I figured out, and I dont know why, that it makes my acceleration slower than shit, so your idea of using it on the drag strip this summer might not work. Although I could probably engage it, do a sick burn out at the staging for show, then disengage before I get to the light. Didnt figure out top speed, I just went around the block after I did it so I didnt get going very fast. I also found out that it dstroys my turning radius (as if it wasnt bad enough before) but I guess thats not really the point of a locking diff. I've only tried it in 2wd on pavement to I'm stoked to see how it does on the trail. Ya, theres absolutely no real write ups for the mod for 4runners so I wrote one up and took pics while I was doing it.

Yeah, it looks like Rics website got the sick photo taken care of! ha!
I have never tried going fast or gunning it with the rear locker, but I did go at least 30-35 or so. I just got pics of my blue-wire mod, and I am going to add them to your thread. I only have one wire grounded, and it works great.

For the poster who has the 02, no you do not have a rear diff lock, the rear diff lock option was discontinued for the 01 model year, only 96-00 could have it factory. What you have to the left of your wheel is a center diff lock, that turns your truck from full time 4wd center diff unlocked 4wd button pressed, to traditional part time when you lock it.diff. You use it when you're stuck or have very limited traction. It's so that you can power through it. With the TRAC, the computer cuts power to the wheels when slip is detected. If you're in snow or mud or any slippery surface, it pretty much leaves you stranded. With the TRAC off, you can get out of it easier. It comes back on at 15MPH (IIRC) for safety purposes.

Live in Arvada and looking to start going 4wheeling, but none of my friends go out. Looks like you folks go out quite a bit. Might be too short notice to head out this time but I would definitely like to go up in the future.ric said:

any one have experience with the powertrax no slip? its suposed to have good road manors but still lock reliably, but i want someone with firsthand experience. (sory for thred jacking)

If you're willing to sacrifice a little on-road for better off-road, then get an Aussie. If you want to sacrifice some of the potential off-road performance for better on-road, then get the Powertrax. I don't have personal experience with the Powertrax in a 4runner, but I do have experience with LSDs (haha not that kind :barf
and you won't be crawling up rocks and stuff as good as you would with a locker, but they are still a pretty big improvement over open diffs. If it were me, I would get an Aussie... no wait, actually if it were me I'd save up and get an ARB. :naughty:

me being a highschool kid i dont have disposible income. i do want a locker, but not if it will cost me nearly a grand. i am leaning tward the powertrax unit bcs this ismy dd. im not looking for the best off road performance, just an improvment over the open diff.

Reading through the changes for the '01 T4R, I think the reason the rear diff lock was discontinued was because they enhanced the traction control to take care of situations where one wheel on an axle is slipping:
