rear diff lock questions

Hey!

I just got a 2000 Limited today and have some questions about the rear locker. I pressed the button and the light started blinking. When it fully engages the locker, will the light go solid? It never went solid.
How do I know when the diff is locked?
Am I right in that you're not supposed to exceed 10 mph with it engaged?

I did search the forum and came up dry

Thanks
Joe

If it hasn't been locked very often then it will take awhile to engage. When I got my 4Runner it took a couple minutes to lock. Now that I've worked it it engages almost instantly.

Get in 4-lo, and come to a complete stop. If you press the e-locker button and it blinks, put it into reverse and back up a foot or so, then put it in 1st. Basically "rock" it into 1st and it should engage the e-locker. I had to do this the first couple of times, now it engages and disengages without issue. Sometimes I have to "rock" it to disengage e-locker as well.

As previously stated you MUST be in 4WD Low range and fully stopped though I belive you can be in gear.

This is of course unless you have the Blue and or grey wire mods.

Does the rear diff locker light on the cluster juss continuously blink when your locked or does it stops blinking and stays solid when locked??

It should stop blinking and stay solid. Also if your having trouble getting it to lock, try turning the wheel and make some wide s turns. By doing that you are allowing the diff to have each rear axle turn at different speeds and that allows the pin to find the right location to lock the diff up.

I can turn on my rear locker without being in 4wd, but yes come to a complete stop or your bust somn,

look up the mod for how to engage in 2wd, makes doing donuts fun,

Love my locker, call it my "easy button"

This is the right answer. It is a habit of mine as soon as hit my locker button to crank the wheel hard in one direction while rolling along the trail. As I do this I hear/feel a pop and know it engaged and the light goes out. Same procedure to unlock it. The backing up that others suggested works for stubborn transfer cases, but is really useless on a diff locker.

I have a 2002 SR5 and my diff locks in 4H. Question I have is do the 2015 SR5's have this or do I have to move to a Trail to get a locking diff?

Can't speak to what it did from the factory as I bought it with 72K miles. Note the owners manual says nothing about first putting it in 4L.

Toyota 4Runner Owners Manual 2002 | Toyota Owners manuals

If you read page 81 and 82 of the owners manual linked above (Maybe different numbers in your actual paper manual) It clearly stated you must be in 4LO and it will disengage if you take it out of 4LO. The operation instruction inside you vehicle should say the same thing.

Your 2002 has a CENTER differential lock in the multi-mode transfer case. This thread is about the rear diff lock (in the rear axle) which was an option on '96-'00 model 3rd gen 4Runners.

To get a rear diff lock in a 5th gen from the factory, you would have to buy a Trail or TRD Pro edition.

Thank you for clearing that up for me (didn't mean to hi-jack the thread). Basically, you answered another question that has been bugging me.

Carry-on!

He could be talking about the center diff from the multi mode tranny, cause I don't think rear e-locking diff was an option in 02 was it?

And it all makes sense.

Can't you do that if you shift it in to the low gear on the main shifter if I remember right you can.
