Rear E Locker

If I were to get an elocker motor, other than the modification to the housing and wiring it in, will I need any other parts? Do I have to add anything inside the differential? Trying to figure out costs and what all I'll need. This is numero uno on my modifications list at ths point, so I'm doing my best to get a shopping list so that I can start piecing bits together as the budget allows.

Are you swapping the ring gear? You have to pull the axles so you might as well do the seals, and bearings if you can. Other than that there aren't any special pieces for the swap itself, just depends on what you're going to do to it. You can rebuild the whole thing or just slap it in and go after modifying the housing. You could always get the whole rear axle and just swap them.

edit: wait, are you planning on getting JUST the motor? or the whole 3rd member? The non-elocker 3rd member is completely different and you can't just put the motor on, you need the whole thing, with ring/pinion and differential.

I strongly advise you just buy an entire drum to drum rear axle that has the elocker already in it. I found mine for $500 on Craigslist and it included all of the factory wiring, switch and ECU. It was a very straightforward installation that I did in an afternoon. Another bonus is you then have your original axle to sell - I got $225 for mine.

Make sure you match the gear ratio to the gear ratio in your front differential. This is true no matter which swap you decide to do.

I thought the rear ends with e-locker only came in 4:10 or 4:30

He said that this is from a Tacoma, but I don't know the year, only that it's an 8" Toyota rear end. I guess I was under the impression that most driveline parts were interchangeable between the Tacoma and 4Runner, but I'm thinking that this locker might be out of the question entirely. Just no way to make it work.

Sucks. Finding the rear end on a locked 3rd gen in this area of the country is proving far more difficult than I would have thought. I don't want to ship, and I don't mind driving a bit. I also want a unit that's not rusted out junk I while not getting too out of budget (I'm a teacher in Oklahoma, the 49th state in teacher salaries... Woohoo Oklahoma!). Is all of that too much to ask?

I have a stock rear elocker 4.30 3rd member and open front 4.30 diff if you are interested in buying a set of matching ratios.

I sent you a pm. I don't know how much change in rpm's would be seen with 4.30 vs 4.10 gears at highway speed, and this truck likes to go on roadtrips. It's definitely something I might be looking more into.

Thanks for the response!

edit.... seems like it would only change rpm's by 250 rpm's or so at 70mph. That's not a big deal to me.

They go for crazy here. Mine came with an e-locker and the rear end was growling like crazy. My diff guy quoted me $800 to rebuild it as long as the ring and pinion were good. Most people around here wanted $450-$600 for a third member used but pulled. I got mine rebuilt with Koyo bearings for $800. It should be fine for yet another 300,000 miles. Small price to pay for longevity. The minute they land in the yards they are gone, like people are sleeping out front waiting for them in line. I'm so happy mine came with one lol.

It's true, I check the junk yard inventory daily and make a swing out there when they open just in case I have a chance at something good, I'm usually the first person there and within ten minutes there's people pulling parts off the front the back and underneath.

I haven't seen an elocker in a junk yard here in years. Toyota axles are the first to go, especially fronts. Every once in a while theres one on craigslist, but they ask ~700 for just the 3rd member.
